I'm planning my next build, but torn between two configs. They will both roughly come to the same cost, around £930.

The first build would be overclock CPU and graphics card, and in my opinion an OVERALL better build. The second would consist of the same CPU but not overclocked, and a stronger GPU but wouldn't be such a complete package.

1st: Overall Complete package - Overclocked, color scheme, tidier

CPU: I5 - 4690K

Cooler: Raijintek Triton AIO Cooler

GPU: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4GB

Motherboard: MSI Z97M - G43

PSU: EVGA Supernova 650W G1

RAM: Avexir Core Blue Series 8GB 1600MHz

SSD: Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB

HDD: Seagate 1TB

CASE: Corsair Air 240 - White

2nd: Cut back in areas for better GPU - Mix and matched

CPU: I5 - 4690

GPU: Inno3D Geforce GTX 980 'Reference Design'

Motherboard: Asus H97M-E

PSU: EVGA Supernova 50W G1

RAM: TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB 1600MHz

HDD: Seagate 1TB

Case: Corsair 240 - White

Which one would be the best in the long run? Intention is for gaming

Number two will be better for the long run. You don't get all of the bells and whistles, but you get higher framerates.

Do build two and wedge in some upgrades in the future if possible.

The second one is a better gaming computer and the CPU you picked is still great.

Please try to be serious we have a certain standard to uphold on this forum when serious questions are asked.

I don't want to just go for a lower graphics card for the sake of a better looking build. Whereas with the second all it would need is the stock  heatsink swapping out, some cable sleeving etc. putting in at a later date to make it look better. Plus i can add an SSD in, whereas i can't just swap out a gtx 970 for a £400+ card a few months down the line. If you know what i mean? I feel the 2nd is up gradable, whereas the 1st would need a lot more....

I just wasn't sure if an Overclocked CPU would make up the lower GPU...

He asked a serious question and you gave him a sarcastic answer. I didn't appreciate it. If you where being serious im afraid you where wrong. You can tell because one has a bigger number than the other....

lmaooo, are you being serious? i didnt give him a sarcastic answer at all. if it sounds sarcastic to you then cool, not my problem. if you dont appreciate it then thats cool too. i gave him the answer that i think was the best. so i did. but cool whatever you think bruh. :)

You said this

970>980

This^ is incorrect. This "980>970" is correct. Also I stated the possibility that you where not being sarcastic "bruh".

980 is overpriced, reference not quiet

970 is ok for 1080p, unless you want crazy settings post processing

get first one, and it has allready ssd and cpu will last longer with mp games

+ that gigabyte cooler is crazy, you are able to overclock, so price difference is definitly not in 980s favour

I could meet half way and still go with the first build, but with a Gigabyte GTX 780ti GHz Edition? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-131-GI

£50 more than the gtx 970, would it be any better in performance?

The GTX 970 is the better card in terms of power usage, and the performance is pretty much the same as a 780ti for less money.

build 2 will be better

though i would cheap out on case and try to get small cheap ssd

u r not gonna overclock locked i5 and that reference 980 got blower design which doesn't throw hot air inside the case like non reference design so u don't really need costly good airflow case

also 500w psu will work just fine

Gigabyte GA-H97-GAMING 3 is cheaper option

or Gigabyte G1.SNIPER H6 for better audio

I recently had a huge (been doing nothing but research it for 2 days) change of heart from that 780ti to the 970 G1

While obviously my reasoning isn't going to 100% apply to your build as well, I chose the 970 for the sake of power consumption (I don't like pushing my PSU and hoping it can handle things) and for the ability to /AFFORDABLY/ (remember they're on a temp. price drop) SLI the 970 in the future.

Personally if I could afford it, I would go with the 980, but as it's been clearly shown by Linus and several other reviewers, that 970 is by far the much better price to performance option. I believe i've even read that the 970 G1 reaches 980 stock speeds.

I'm not to sure if the CPU would bottleneck the 980 however, but i'm sure there are a few benchmarking tests out there that could answer that question.

That's the first rig someone has come up for me that i actually like the look of and think will but what i'll go with... Might end up getting the Gigabyte 970 G1 instead of MSI just because of the cooler and overclocking capability. But other than that, that is one good looking build.

Glad you like it. If you don't mind spending an extra £20 or so, then go with the 256GB SSD as a 128GB can fill up pretty fast.

The GTX 980 is not worth it over the GTX 970. You're better off going with the MSI mobo with the 4690 (without the AIO cooler) and the EVGA 650w and SLI-ing two GTX 970s. For the rest, just get whatever's less expensive.

I should probably break the news that you can only fit a gpu with a height (or width depending on perspective) of 120mm max (maybe a few mm more).
Any GPU with high-profile pipes or just very wide/tall is not going to fit.

I'm going SLI 970s and I had to choose EVGA since they only have 112mm (4.376") cards, I will be getting the one with a blower cooler for better airflow.

Therefore a reference 980, like in build 2, or EVGA 970 seems to be the only options.

I would elect to do a modification of the build 1 with a smaller gpu in terms of height.

I would suggest this build, however you should change the parts to fit the colour scheme that you decide on.

The PSU is upgraded as it will give you headroom for potential SLI down the line, but perhaps 650 is sufficient due low TDP on the 970s)

The EVGA Supernova G2 is a better PSU if the op wants to go SLI.

I would get a Z97 board over a Z87. Might as well get the latest chipset.

Yeah I realised that about the PSU as soon as i posted :P. The board was for a colour scheme i made in there but I mentioned he could change parts for his own colour scheme. The benefit of z97 is basically just compatibility without bios updates in the future and a few storage interfaces iirc.
