That's quite high I would imagine, I don't own an Intel CPU so I'm not 100% sure. What cooler are you using.

im running prime 95 and im getting temps from 70c to 88c is that okay?

actuallly on one cors its reaching 89c

Provided you're saying this can you take a screenshot from the BIOS & in Windows with Prime95/whatever cpu benchmark + CPU-Z

What kind of settings?

Do not run Prime95 on Haswell. Use something like IntelBurnTest or AIDA64 and then tell us what the temps are like.

even in idle the cores max temps are in the 50's ):

Need to know your voltage settings. Idle 50's is ridiculously high unless you're throwing around 1.3v, if it's at a modest 1.2-1.23 do a remount of the cooler, something's not right.

I have the 4790k and am running stock cooling.  Ive never ran Prime 95 because i dont personally want to hit those kinds of temps.

So yes those are very high temps if you have an after market cooler ( if youve got a stock cooler those are high temps but expected).  Just remember that prime 95 is DESIGNED to achieve those types of temps on CPU's

most motherboard manufacturers within their tuning use "adaptive voltage mode"

which tend to increase heat due to the extra voltage needed to use in synthetic

stress/benchmark apps. most manufacturers say "do not use adaptive voltage

modes when using stress/benchmark," use manual mode for these types of

stress to reduce the voltage/heat output.

well i took out the 212 evo and i seen that the thermal paste was messed up so i just put the stock cooler on and the temps range from 30-40 while doing nothing and 50 while doing something and 50-79 while gaming so imma give it a week or 2 and see if i should return the cpu to new egg

I just looked in the uefi and it says its at 1.3v or some shit lol

Nothing is wrong with the CPU. 1.3v and stock cooler I would expect them to be even higher. You need to change your BIOS settings, as @airdeano has mentioned...multiple times.

Prime95 is horrible on Haswell CPU's. Run aida64 or OCCT for proper stress testing.

If you have no idea how to use your BIOS what would be the point in running Prime95? It's a benchmarking utility, mainly used to benchmark the stability of over clocked CPU's. Your computer will never encounter that kind of stress in any real world scenario.

well i was gaming the other day and the core temps got up to 90c  but i finally updated my bios and it took care of that problem the hottest it gets now with the stock cooler is 74c

For Prime95 its common to see Temps up into the 80's. Prime95 does not work well with Haswell CPU's. You will get better "real world" performance numbers with using Aida64 or OCCT. But as far as Prime95, 80's are acceptable.
