Manual, it works better if you are for instance stuck and the weel keeps spinning, also going on low rpm on the engine can aid climbing hills

If he can deal with it being manual I highly suggest going with that, especially offroad.

Whatever he feels comfortable with is the best answer. If he usually drives manual and is used to using the clutch, than manual is the best choice as you have control over the clutch. otherwise if he more comfortable with an auto transmission, than he should go for the automatic. If it where me i would definately go for clutch and manual with a close ratio transmission

I have a new 4runner and the automatic is the way to go. people are stuck with the stick is better for offroading mentality from ages ago. fact is a modern auto is better for most people with todays offroad geared transmissions. a stick is better for people who like to rock crawl so if he's going that extreme then a stick is better suited for his style but an auto for that model is great for most people.

you generally gain an extra gear if you get the manual version of a car//truck/suv/etc. from toyota.

this leads to closer gear ratio, but also the highest gear will generally let you drive a constant, high speed (such as 70 mph) at a lower RPM than the Automatic. youll likely get a few extra mpg on the highway.

also if youre offroading a manual can help. But its not required.

if your just city driving an auto is fine. But i dont think most people buy a 4runner for city driving lol.

Don't get an autotragic.

Though I suppose it's really up for personal preference these days.  Autos seem to be about as efficient as standard transmissions.  I think it's a shame more people don't row their own.  So he should be fine doing either.

Still.  Autotragic.

If it's got selectable 4wd and high + low gears i'd suggest a manual. If it's permanent 4wd auto will be fine.

Automatic transmission should have been a standard ages ago.

Manual transmission is slave work.
