Need Suggestions on Monitor Selection

TheRevTastic

Hi,

I'm soon to get a EVGA GTX 970 and am also wanting to upgrade my monitors. Right now I'm using an old HP S2331a as my main monitor and a crappy Vizio TV as my secondary. I am wanting to switch these out for two good monitors but don't know which brand to go with and what monitor in which brand to choose.

I am wanting them to be both 23 inches and either have displayport or dvi hookups (mostly display due to the 970 having 2 display port inputs). My price range is $130 to $180.

I mainly use my computer for gaming (League of Legends, CS:GO, and other triple a and indie games). I also use it for casual computer time like browsing the internet, watching youtube, watching twitch streams and random things with designing and animating for my college courses in video animation.

I don't care about the resolution as long as it's not under 1920x1080.

So if you have any suggestions for me I would highly appreciate them. I've heard Asus and BenQ are really good brands but the computers they market for "Gaming" are highly expensive and tbh I never go with anything targeted at "Gaming" anyways.

Thanks,

TheRevTastic

Is 24 inch also fine? Also IPS 60Hz or TN 120/144Hz?

Yeah 24 would also be fine as long as it's in my price range. I'd rather have 144hz but most of those go into the $200's.

Um pretty much all of the above in equal portions. I play CSGO and League competitively (not like pro but I play them both ranked play) then I play casual games like Bioshock, Borderlands, TWD, Arma, etc.

If there is a 144hz monitor at or around $180-$220 I might pick those up as they are better, just don't want to go anywhere over that.

Yeah that's too much for me atm, seeing as Im trying to get 2 monitors. Do you have a link to it by chance? I'll think it over and maybe just get one for now to replace the crappy TV that I'm using and get another later on and continue to use my HP S2331a.

Dell Ultasharp U2414H, bought it few months back for 200 euro's. It is a little bit above your budget but it is really worth it man. The monitor has almost no bezel, nice stand with hight adjust and some good tilt to it. It is a displayport only monitor, 1080p. I watch movie's on it and play a lot of games like csgo, bf4 and diablo on it. People think the 8ms grey to grey response time is bad but I don't feel the difference.

Oh by the way, your gtx 970 isn't going to benefit a lot on a 144hz monitor so I wouldn\t really recommend it. I personnaly prefer colours and viewing angles above some better fps.

it will in LoL and csgo, which he plays. and 8ms are really slow... played on a 10ms and switched to 1ms. its noticeable

Yes the Asus VG248QE is known to be a really good monitor

If there is a 144hz monitor at or around $180-$220 I might pick those up as they are better, just don't want to go anywhere over that.

Two things:

1) If you want more than one Display Port output go for Gigabyte's GTX 970 G1 Gaming Windforce edition. They're using the outputs from the 980 (3xDP, 1xHDMI, 1xDVI) so you can have multiple DP connections. Plus, it's actually a better cooler - quieter and cooler at the same time.

2) If you're not particularly interested in 'targeted for gaming' and you don't really play super-competitively in FPS games (other than CSGO), and you're generally more interested in casual games, then I think you'd really like an IPS monitor. Better colour accuracy, more vibrant colours generally make for a more immersive experience in my opinion, and better viewing angles (not necessarily important when gaming but if you're using for productivity or something I find it helpful).

And if you'd consider going for a single higher-res monitor instead (which I think would be good given that you're splashing out on a GTX 970):

You make some really good points. I just got done watching Linus's Gigabyte GTX 970 video and started debating that over the EVGA. Also I'm liking the LG and Asus monitor you supplied. Good price and what you bring up with the colors is a really really good point and with it's price I can pick up 2 of them easily.

Also really stupid question, I can't seem to find it on newegg or amazon but will the monitors come with the standard vga cables or with display port ones? Same with the gpu or will I need to purchase those seperatly?

I have 2 LG monitors in my household. Mine came with a VGA cable, the other came with HDMI (I suspect because it had inbuilt speakers). So more than likely the LG ones will come with VGA or HDMI, I don't know if Asus will supply anything but probably either VGA or HDMI. Almost certainly not Display Port at least.

I think the best thing would probably be to just order them and see what they come with, if you need to go out and buy cables it's not like they're difficult to find (especially for HDMI).
