this is of course personal opinion but for sli get reference if your just getting a single card either strix or acx. personally i prefer the strix, the dcuii line of coolers from asus are pretty beast and quiet. Ive heard of a lot of noise complaints from the acx 970 owners

I would go for the G1 Gaming model personally, but Strix outmeasures ACX in terms of cooling performance and (IMO) looks. Meanwhile, reference is a little bit sexier (again, IMO.)

But honestly, whichever looks best to you.

I would pick the strix, great cooler and only a $20 premium over the other ones. If you plan on watercooling in the future I would pick an evga card though, as the warranty is not voided when watercooling evga cards, and the strix doesn't use a reference pcb if I remember correctly.

Strix Or ACX would probably be better in terms of functionality.  But personally, I'd go reference because of the sheer beauty of the card and the fact later down the line its going to be harder to find the reference models.  At least where I live.

the noise complaints are mostly due to the ACX fans constant spinning, which in today's world, is "oh so bad and so power consuming and noisy" to a lot of gamers, but in all honesty, it isnt that bad, it have it benefits. by being on at all time when your card is powered up, it able to keep your card cool even in idle, which is more essential and help the card life span, by no mean im saying the passive fan mode that MSI and ASUS, and other components uses, is bad, it is great if you enjoy the silence and want to save every single dime on your power bill, and it doesnt really cause the temperature of the card go any higher than the ACX. But ye, the noise are mainly from the traditional "always spinning" ACX fans, but EVGA uses double ball baring for their ACX2 so the life span of the fans are much, much longer than the previous version of ACX (or so i heard from reviews and EVGA)

One short note, from what i found, EVGA offer 2 models for the gtx 970, the ACX v1 and ACX v2 (or ACX2), according to the official listing on their site, so make sure you get the ACX2 if you want the best bang for your bucks, one good thing the EVGA 970 have over the other is the higher based clock speed for the price!
