I need a way to ELI5 to my friends the diffrence between using a Xeon and an Core i7

Xeon=More cores but less powerful per core/more instruction sets (computer languages) supported... for multitasking 

i7= Decent amount of cores, but also lots of performance per core/ higher amount of possible performance per core... for performance

Say this:

 

"Xeon is only better if you are using software that can take advantage of it.

Otherwise i7 is better."

 

If he asks what kind of software, just say "If you have to ask, you're not using it."

The Aston Martin DB9 is a Core i7 (take your pick, although the DB9 is more like the 5960x)

The only benefit i see of xeons is access to ECC ram. 

 unless he is doing computational work xeons are never worth it.
