I'm going to build a new PC very soon, and I need help with the operating systems

Before 5 months I bought a mini laptop for browsering and skype, When I unboxed that laptop I saw a windows CD (x64 bit)

It doesn't have product key but here's the information that is written on the CD :

Microsoft

Intended for distribution with a refurbished PC.

DVD

Includes Service Pack 1

64-bit software

Windows 7 Home Premium

----------------------------------------

But I have the product key on that mini laptop, can't I use the CD and the product key for my new build?

You should be able to yes. Before anyone says you can't those keys on the laptop aren't in use. The manufacturers use a manufacturer key to activate the laptop. Entering a unique key on every laptop would be too tedious and time consuming. So after they use their key they put the key you purchased by buying the computer on the bottom of your laptop. Since it isn't registered with anything you can use it on future machines.

Not without invalidating the Laptop's software. Also, if the motherboard has been replaced in the laptop, you will not be able to activate it probs and you will have to call Microsoft.

I would just buy a new license, or use that software exchange thing on reddit.

And the DVD will work, but it'll come with the Laptop Manufacturer's registry things on it, but no biggie

Compatible with Windows 95

Nope, OEM licenses are attached to the first motherboard that the OS is installed on. The CD should work (IDK tbh), but the product key WILL NOT

Oh, but what happens if I didn't put the product key?

Do you recommend me getting a new OS or just stick with that?

If it works by all means go ahead and use that, but if not you can buy Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 really cheaply on g2a.com. I tried using my laptops activation key on my dad's computer and it didn't work.

That's my point, the key hasn't been used. The key will work!

Did you even read my post? The key on his laptop is not in use, that is not how manufacturers activate the laptops. It is such a big misconception for most people, especially on these forums. Believe what you want, but I know the key WILL work because the key IS NOT in use for his laptop.

Scaryjam is correct with vista and 7 oem keys can be used to activate any disc retail or oem on any pc. With xp you would need to use a oem disc with an oem key.

Computer manufactures do not activate your copy of windows with the same key they put on the case. It's activate with a master product key.

You are mixing things now. Keys aren't CD/DVD bound. Or haven't been since XP.

I can't say about Win7 branded OEMs but my friend @GoodBytes could give view on that matter. Retail keys and non-branded OEMs can be reused. Either way, DO NOT ENTER key during installation. You can always activate license later and if it doesn't work you will have 30 days to get new license.
