1440p IPS or 2160p TN if they cost the same?

othertomperson

It's finally happened. The Asus PB278Q  27" 60 Hz 1440p IPS panel and the Asus PB287Q 28" 60 Hz 4K/2160p TN panel are within £40 of eachother. (On Amazon UK)

Does this make 4K a no brainer, or is TN still a dirty word in these parts?

personally 1440p IPS

if its only 60hz I prefer IPS for better colour accuracy and viewing angles (which matter on large displays in my experience)

also unless you have dual 980s you will struggle to run any games at 4k, where as a single high end GPU can run 1440p

Also 1440p works nicer under windows and does not suffer scaling issues

lol either solution would require an upgrade, my GPUs are good enough for 1080p xD

This wasn't about my setup though, I was just interested generally in what you guys think.

Naw, I'm guessing they're seeing the SLI 580s in my profile. I tried downscaling from 1440p, actually, to see if it would be a viable upgrade without changing my GPUs. Answer was not really, no. Mainly for heat issues actually. There's a lot of overclocking headroom in them, but Palit's cooler isn't great. And at this stage watercooling them, and the rest of the rig with it, doesn't seem as economical as simply upgrading.

1440p IPS, definitely. 4K isn't here yet, and IPS is superior to TN in almost every way.

I would go with the 1440p due to the current windows scaling problems, and text being too blurry and whatnot. But if you do stuff like autocad or other design which does not necessarily require color accuracy, then I think 4k would be best for you

Also, the color accuracy people complain about on TNs is not that bad on the PB287q in my opinion.

I would say you should try to see the PB287q for yourself in person if you can. I saw one at a Fry's a couple weeks ago.

4K isn't here yet? What do you mean by that?

IPS has superior colour reproduction and viewing angles, TN has superior response time and is cheaper. Some TN panels actually have very good colour reproduction as well, so it varies from monitor to monitor.

I would really like to, but I don't know anywhere near me that displays, uh, displays.

I mean that graphics cards haven't caught up yet. One would need a GTX 980 or 290X to play games at an acceptable framerate, and would have to run them in SLI  or CrossFireX if 60 FPS at Ultra is desired.

He has dual 580s is SLI, it's just slightly hidden in his profile

Do you intend to game, or work a lot as well? Because if it's productivity minded, the 1440p IPS is a great option. It's that sweet spot where you'll have no need for scaling, and the workspace is still great. Plus color reproduction and viewing angles.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Again: I'm not asking for advice with a plan for me to upgrade. It's not about my gaming or productivity set up. I'm interested in your opinions on the two products, given that they are now priced the same, and how you weigh the relative pros and cons of each.

If the LG 21:9 weren't the price of both of these put together the answer would be simple as far as I'm concerned :P

Then I'd go with the 1440p option persoanlly. I think it's better.

A pro that the 4k one has the the 1440p one doesn't is that you can run 1080p like native since it's 1080p x4, though more like a tv.
