Why do you want a higher core count? more cores does not always mean more performance

Xeons can not be over-clocked like K series processors can be, you are better off with an unlocked i5 quad core for normal use, gaming etc etc as its clocked a lot higher and will have much more performance

True but I bet a quad core i5 or cheap i7 would wipe the floor with that Xeon even in rendering

you found it if you are okay with lower clockspeed the CPU you've linked typicaly is meant for doing just that...on a ''budget''

maybe

OP the one youve selected is 6 core but no hyperthreading...try to look for a quad core with hyperthreading (xeon E3) those are faster...OR find one WITH hyperthreading.

youd still be better off with a 1155 i7 unlocked for that

yeah it would. this is just sooo slow

i'm not really on a buget, afterall, i'm buying 980 SLI...

Then why not get a better Xeon?  A faster i7? maybe even go x99? get a 5930k, you will not regret it if you can afford it, it will make rendering work fly

something like this if you dont mind going with socket 1150 would be a better buy OP...this is a i7-4770 with a boost clock of 3.7ghz and 8 threads

in that case, get a 5930k or a 5960x. the board and memory will stay the same, you will just have to shell out those few more quid for the cpu, and it will be hella faster (2-4x on stock)

then get a lga 2011 i7 cpu like a 5820k if you are ok with 6 cores and don't want to spend too much or go for the 5960x which has 8 cores but is more than twice the price of a 5820k.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

oh, sorry that i didn't mention, i've only got the budget to have 980 SLI IF i go the z97 route, so... yeah, don't wanna sacrafice the second GPU just for X99 (DDR4 is the main issue here...)

at that clock speed and price you are better off getting an pentium g3258 and clocking it to 4.4ghz. It would be faster at 1/4 the cost.

that xeon needs 2011-3 and ddr4, so you cant do z97 with it anyway.

now tell me, what program are you using for rendering. because depending on this, it matters whether to spend on the cpu or the gpus

oh, the GPU are my main graphical renderer (blender), and CPU are for FUMEFX, and REALFLOW 2014

sometimes, i really wanna do somthing with REAL high particle counts

in that case, get a 4790k ^^ or check classifieds for an x79 mobo and cpu, there were a few when x99 launched

am looking at it, but are the cores good? i mean, it's like 2 generations away.....

x79 was the first thing i was looking at..

i7 5820k vs x79

ivy is on average 5-10% slower, clock for clock than haswell. so you lose PCIe lanes on x99, but you lose those 10% and some storage options on x79. but in general, x99 is more expensive

really the 4790k will do you just fine.

also x79 won't support AVX2 instructions.

OP i'd get a 4790K and Z97 in your shoes.

this would be the next step up if you can afford it OP...you'd need deep pocket to build around that:
