EVGA Step Up Program (GTX 780 Ti to GTX 980)

isdouble
Go to solution Solved by rodion.zissou,

Just thought I'd let you know I submitted my Step Up on Friday from 780 SC ACX to 980. my que number is still pending. They say that stock issues may cause weeks of waiting, (they'll probably sell as much of the first batch normally as possible). But as long as you submit before the 90 day deadline you should be good. Also, to reiterate it says very clearly they don't include tax on your original invoice and you don't get any positive $ difference back, and you've got to pay shipping and fees. All together I'll pay around $80 to ship old card back and new one home.

Jeez, the thread blew up within minutes. Just to clarify, EVGA does not give the difference back. So I will be taking a $150 give or take loss. It seems like there are more people saying yes than no.

For future proof, IF I had to SLI, I guess GTX 980 is the better option to go for.. I guess I'll wait until a day before my 90 days is up to see if they bring out other options if not, I will probably end up going for the GTX 980 with ACX.

Thanks guys.

Your video card already lost $150 in value over the past three months since you bought it.

So just get the 980 and you will be able to sell it for more in the future for your next upgrade.

He'd get more than 150$ selling it to some random dude on the streets. Hell, I'd pay him 200$ right now for it.

Derp. 150$ + 980.

I believe you don't need to send back your card until they have "approved" the trade up right? Do I need to pay shipping fees for the new card as well? I would've expect EVGA to pay when they ship the new card to me.

Thanks for the info!

You don't send in your card until they email you saying your new one is ready and waiting. Yes you'll choose from several shipping options for the new card. I chose the cheapest at around 10USD. They'll ship new card once old one is received and approved to be fully functional.

You might want to rethink stepping up right now.

This doesn't apply to step up. One may only step up to reference cards with blower cooler. That article refers to the ACX cooler.

I say go for it you've been using it for the past 82 days take it as you're paying the $150 for the 780ti's warranty. Taking the 980 it also renews the 5yr warranty as well and it's faster then a 780ti too

Actually, you can now get ACX cooler with GTX 980. It wasn't available until yesterday I believe.

Oh, cool.

Edit

That actually pisses me right the f*ck off, because they removed reference and replaced it with the acx. I'm hoping my submitted form for the reference holds up seeing as I did it on friday before they changed it. I need reference blower for SLI down the line.

Edit

I contacted support, my Step Up request for the reference still stands. Whew. Thanks for that article BTW. I was going for reference anyhow, but now I know to stay away from ACX on the 980s. BTW, on the step up list it says ACX 2.0, I wonder if that's a revision fixing the aforementioned contact issue.

  • 4 weeks later...

Your video card already lost $150 in value over the past three months since you bought it.

So just get the 980 and you will be able to sell it for more in the future for your next upgrade.

THIS. Just like most things (cars you drive off the lot, new pair of jordans, etc) lose their value immediately. I just stepped up from my 780 Ti to a 980 ACX 2.0. My friend also stepped up from the 780 6GB to a 980 ACX 2.0 as well. I think of it like this: I was able to game for 2+ months with one of the fastest production video cards from NVIDIA, and now I'm in the unique position to trade in that card for a brand new 980 which has a lower TDP and appears to have more overclocking headroom than the 780. If anything, I should be the most upset since I spend around $710 for the Classified version. At the end of the day,  I still feel that I'm coming out ahead by have the latest and greatest.

Now, should I feel bad about spending around $4000 plus on a Z97 platform instead of waiting another month and spec'ing out a X99 system? Well.... <_<

Do it.... you've already lost the $150 due to price decreases and you're not going to get that back...... so take the newer product.

The issue with ACX cooler only affects GTX 970s using the ACX 1.0 cooler.

980s only come with ACX2.0, so they're unaffected.

The ACX 2.0 was announced way before this issue came about, but they are discontinuing the 1.0 line of coolers

I have already submitted my Step Up a while ago. It's still in process so.. The only thing I want to change is that I would love to get the reference version so I can go SLI route but it wasn't available (Only the ACX version is available for GTX 980).

Either way I think it's been close to a month now and it's still in "pending" mode.

That's good to hear. Still, luckily I got my request in for the reference blower, I'll be SLIing. I contacted EVGA and they'll honor my step up to reference. It's been weeks though...

I've had mine ready to step up since September 25th. However, people on the forum say that they are starting to ship cards
