EVGA Step Up Program (GTX 780 Ti to GTX 980)

isdouble
Go to solution Solved by rodion.zissou,

Just thought I'd let you know I submitted my Step Up on Friday from 780 SC ACX to 980. my que number is still pending. They say that stock issues may cause weeks of waiting, (they'll probably sell as much of the first batch normally as possible). But as long as you submit before the 90 day deadline you should be good. Also, to reiterate it says very clearly they don't include tax on your original invoice and you don't get any positive $ difference back, and you've got to pay shipping and fees. All together I'll pay around $80 to ship old card back and new one home.

So I bought a GTX 780 Ti with ACX (1020 MHz) about 82 days ago. That puts me within the 90 days of upgrading my GPU via Step Up Program.

I would go for it if they make the GTX 980 SC with ACX (1266 MHz) as an option but they only have the Non-SC version at the moment.

Should I go for the GTX 980 with ACX (1126 MHz) regardless?

I know GTX 980 is still a faster card but my card cost me $700 whereas the GTX 980 is around $550ish.

CASE - CM Storm Stryker, PSU - EVGA 1000 P2 80+ Plat, CPU - i7 4790K w/ NZXT Kraken X61, GPU - MSI GTX 1080 TI Seahawk X, MB - ASUS Z97 Maximus Hero VII, RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaw X Series (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600, SSD - SAMSUNG 1 TB, DISPLAY - ACER XB270HU + SAMSUNG S24C570HL

He'd get more than 150$ selling it to some random dude on the streets. Hell, I'd pay him 200$ right now for it.

Do it. 980 is faster, period. And the SC doesn't matter, you can do that in afterburner in less  than 10 seconds..

Hmm.. going with the GTX 980 w/ ACX 2.0 is recommended. However there is the matter of the $150. Not worth it IMHO.

How is it not worth it? The 980 performs very similalrly, will be easier to resell in the future as its a newer card, and a second one can be picked up for SLI for $150 less.

Well, no. But he thought they would. He won't get anything back, but he will get a 980 if he gives them his 780Ti.

If they dont give you the money back, its not worth it. They perform almost the same...

They perform almost the same, but one is newer, has support for newer features, will be easier to sell, will be cheaper to SLI and cheaper to power. How is it not worth it?

The 980 performs a little better than the 780Ti and overclocks well.... Definitely worth it.

Jeez, the thread blew up within minutes. Just to clarify, EVGA does not give the difference back. So I will be taking a $150 give or take loss. It seems like there are more people saying yes than no.

For future proof, IF I had to SLI, I guess GTX 980 is the better option to go for.. I guess I'll wait until a day before my 90 days is up to see if they bring out other options if not, I will probably end up going for the GTX 980 with ACX.

Thanks guys.

He paid more, if he gets the $150 back the GTX 980 is the clear choice. If not, you are losing money. It means the step up programma wasn't free, you paid a $150 membership fee for it. If the OP's Ti was a year or more old it would've been worth it.

They probably won't give other options and an SC card isn't drastically faster than a non SC card -- and more than likely you'll be able to OC it yourself. I'd just step up to the 980 now and be done with it.

Yes, technically hes losing money....but he's also getting a superior product. It would be stupid to keep the 780Ti. Its not like its going to retain its $700 value now that the 980, which is superior, is only $550.
