is the 5820K a good CPU?

asim1999

i currently have it with a Rampage V Extreme. i havent even started to overclock yet. is it a good CPU as i only will add upto 2 graphics cards for 1080p and is 28 PCI lanes enough for 1080p?

Also is the 5960X worth it for 2 extra cores as it costs 2.5X as much in the UK ( where i live)

No, it sucks for gaming. A 4790k will perform better.

You don't really make much sense with what you're saying. From what I understood, you bought a 5820k, and now you're asking if it's good (it is). You're saying you want 2 gpu's for 1080p and are asking if 28 PCI lanes is enough for 1080p. That question doesn't make sense but yes you can run 2 gpu's and have enough lanes. And why do you want a 5960x now?

well he spend a shit ton of money for x99 and 2 graphics cards for 1080p, so Im guessing he's just another one of those kids that just games and thinks they need x99

nvm he said he didnt buy it...

maybe next time you shouldn't say you 'have it' OP...

A comparison in what? The 5960x will only be worth it for editing/rendering.

Well, what can you do... Lol. For at least he has enough power to do anything else, if he wishes to.

the 4790k is more than enough. I doubt he does rvideo editing and 3d rendering on a daily basis as a job. He also said he cant afford it.

So in this case the 4790k will perform better.

Then why don't we ask the op directly why in the world is he justifying all that power...

If it's only gaming at 1080p and he's deciding because he can't afford much. Then like other have said. Don't jump to x99 yet if you not prepared. But if you already had (op) then just for gaming stay like that.

However anything else like hardcore editing, rendering ; if you can afford then be happy to upgrade.

It always come down to user demand. Depending on your workload your upgrade might or might not be justified.

It's good for up to 3 graphics cards, nothing really comes close to saturating PCIe 3.0 x8, so with 24+ lanes you're fine unless you want a fourth card.  The extra cores on the 5960X means you probably won't be able to overclock it as high, which is more important for gaming performance.  Most games don't benefit much from over four cores, and 6 cores is the limit of usefulness for games in my opinion, only a few games will benefit from that.  Beyond that you're just sacrificing potential overclock headroom for nothing.  The 5960X would be better for video rendering but for gaming there's not much point going beyond the 5820K.
