G-Sync means that the refresh rate of the monitor will dynamically vary. So to get 144 Hz, the gpu needs to deliver 144 FPS.

But with a card as powerful as the 980, this shouldnt be a problem in most games anyways. And then, of course, the gaming experience will be much smoother.

Depends on the game. If you can push the game at 144 FPS, sure. If you can't, then no.

If you're going to play games like watchdogs, crysis, or battlefield on ultra settings then no because obviously that high of a frame rate won't be attainable.

If you're going to play less demanding games like, I don't know, dare I say minecraft or counter strike then yes there is potential benefit from using a 144Hz display.

Would I recommend one though? No, I would buy an expensive IPS panel for the price of a 144Hz TN panel any day, but that's just me and to each their own.  :)

@ 1080p a single 980 can deliver over 60 FPS and often over 120fps in any game provided you don't enable things like super sampling.
