old HHD thoughts please

Go to solution Solved by minimoose,

hey guys thanks for the awesome fast reply's the rig she is using is a I7 930 ( i know super old tech lol ) 6 gig in tri chan and dual 660's  all on a Gigbyte 58X board with the old sata1 hdd she has backed up the most important files. the  currnet  load of windows on it is only 3 months old

As the guy above said:

Defrag the drive.  Otherwise I would get an SSD.  Also an i7 930 is not really very bad.

Hey internet land

My gf's rig has been getting slower and slower coming out of hibernation when she has left to go to sleep. i feel that it's the 5+ years old 500gig Seagate HDD that's been flogged and flogged again with formats and multiple  rig swaps over the years.

would anyone be able to send me their opinions on my issue?

as I've now set her pc to never turn off the HDD apart from shutdown

i know this maybe the wrong section  but i'd appreciate the help :)

A brand new HDD slows down a computer a lot compared to an SSD.  So yes it probably is slowing down her computer.

However if the computer is 5 years old, everything else is probably slow too.  Install Linux Mint is possible, that should speed it up a lot

if that is so then start backing up ASAP.

But in saying that are you sure its the HDD? it could also be other hardware or just age?

Clean install windows and don't sleep or hibernate. Always shut down properly. Also disable hibernation for extra space.

Probably would be good to replace the hard drive.

Or at least back it up and run some disk cleanup.
