Hi, I don't know if this is the correct section of this forum to post my thread but anyways,

I have 8GB of ram and I use about 50% MAX.

Should I disable the pagefile? Will it make my computer faster? Should I make it smaller?

I have noticed that the System process in task manager sometimes uses 100% of my HDD, and then everything is slow. Could this be from the pagefile?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! :)

Hi there.

I won't suggest disabling the pagefile yet, but for now, can you try to disable any antivirus software/disk utilities that are running in the background?

Those programs might be the things causing the slowdown...

Is the disk heavily fragmented or almost full? A fragged pagefile is something that you do not want...

Also, check the health (using the SMART data) of the disk since it may be a sign of its impending demise...

Kill the page file, kill it with all you might. Then raise its bloody corpse above your head.

It is a 1TB Seagate Barracuda and I am currently using about 100GB of it. I checked disk defragmenter and there is no fragmention.

I would disable page file and see if that speeds it up, but I would really leave it around 1 GB just so it's there for those few cases you might need it.

I will try disabling it.:D

That's weird if you're getting 100% utilization...

Try disabling pagefile now...

Question what os are you running? And is the 100% utilization when there is nothing or almost no transfer rate?

I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, The 100% disk utilization seems to happen randomly, at any time, but mostly when idle or web browsing.

Disabled Pagefile - So far so good, almost no disk utilization! :)

Yes, from the store. It didn't do this after I upgraded (when it just came out) until a few months ago, I've scanned my computer with Malwarebytes and it was clean.

I'm going to upgrade to an SSD  :D when it's christmas (Samsung 840 EVO 250GB) and I'm going to reinstall Windows.

HDD Utilization is still fine after disabling the pagefile...

Also remember the page file also takes care of some system dumps so without out troubleshooting some BSODs might get harder

I knew that, but I haven't had a BSOD in about 2 years and if I do I can usually restart my PC and everything should be fine, and if it does BSOD again, I can enable the pagefile again. :)

Ok well if it comes back I wont be surprised as its a issue that many people experienced when going from 8 to 8.1. I even has it on one system with pagefile off.

Also remember the page file also takes care of some system dumps so without out troubleshooting some BSODs might get harder

renable it if that happens

you likely wont get any of that. Ive been running no page file since ive been able to do 8GB without issue, which was the C2D/C2Q days.

They sometimes say that disabling the pagefile can cause problems with certain apps. When you're getting problems because of it, there's a simple solution:

create a ramdisk, like for example with 2 gb of ur ram. And then assign the pagefile to your ramdisk, problem solved :D.
