M.2 OS Drive...?

I'm about to embark on the noble quest to build my first PC (project here), and the motherboard I've chosen, the Maximus VII Gene, has a slot for one of these, but nobody seems to be talking about this M.2 business anywhere that I've found, so my question is: would this be a valid/possible/stable/sane place to install the OS?

You could do it, but right now you can get a decent 250GB SATA SSD for the same price as an okay 120/128GB M.2 drive. And I don't think any of them have black PCBs.

 

And besides that, the speed boost wouldn't really be that noticeable, unless you load a lot of shit or do some kind of content creation that hammers the drive.
