As the title says this is a build for my father. He currently is using a very shitty computer and in an even worse set up (back of the basement that is cold unless under the furnace vent that is hot as hell when on and he is under clothes hanging to dry) so in-light of this and running into a bit of extra money I decided to build him a system. I don't have a budget but of course want to spend little as possible.

I want this computer to be able to work as a home server with a raid card or use the intel raid if the motherboard is good enough. We have a few hard drives already (3tb x2, 1tb x1, 500gb x1) It should be able to run 1 or 2 virtual machines with okay performance (about pentium performance). I have 2 4gb sticks of ram to add in plus a 450/500W PSU. I also have a nice case I bought and used for 3 days that is ITX until I figured out I could not put in my old gpu. Post your suggestions and I will update this post later with a full build I hope will work.

Are you planning on running his computer as a VM?

It will function as both. Since he has room for only 1 computer now I have started to clean the damm place up.

Hmm, don't really think that it would be possible to do that. You don't want to share the system drive....
