Seriously, 144p video is a struggle on our internet with frequent pausing. I'd switch from Comcast but it's kinda the only option here (for high speed internet anyway). Anything I can do to speed it up or keep it at what we paid for (about 60 down, 12 up)?

Thanks!

What

144p video should run on like, less than 0.5Mbps down. They can't be throttling you that much. Call them.

I know right, but actually, loading at 144p is sluggish AF... I tried doing an Ookla speedtest and I couldn't even get a download speed.... It skipped and went straight to upload (which was working fine)...

Well, then it sounds like something is wrong.  Not that they are throttling

try a VPN

With the speed you have 1080p should be no problem.

Hotspot shield does free trials.  Just download that and see if it helps.  If it helps then it might be worth it do pay for it.

Did you hit your datacap?

Don't even know if we have one, but thing is, I, the biggest user of the internet, have not been on there much (school started recently and I have homework for days) so we should be fine there. So, for the past two weeks, I've been at school or doing schoolwork.

This problem started about a week ago I might add.

Get a VPN!  It should REALLY help.  PIA is the best.

I genuinely have no clue what a VPN is....

Please explain, Google wasn't English enough for me...

OOOHHH, I'd like to add, Android devices are getting the WiFi just fine. Windows/OSX/Ubuntu aren't getting it too well. One iMac is wired to the internet and it still affects it.

A VPN basically re-routes your traffic multiple times which by coincidence prevents throttling of certain services.

A VPN encrypts your data so Comcast can't see what you are doing, and so they can't throttle specific things, it's totally legal and everything.  Like a guy above said, get the Hotspot Shield trial and see if that helps.  Though it sounds like you might need to reboot your modem or something if the speed test doesn't even work.

Not the only vpn that decent's but they get the job done and sponsored LTT for a awhile.

A vpn masks your network trafic.  So when you try to go to youtube Comcast only sees that your connecting to the vpn not to youtube.  If your isp is throttling these sites this usually fixes it.

We turn the modem off every night. I've reset it entirely 6 times now...

As state above, then, your next step should be to contact comcast, futile as it may sound, it's the next step in the troubleshooting tree.

I thought Portland prided itself on being a very progressive city. Stone aged ISP dinosaurs who throttle doesn't sound like it.

Well we do have a rather large number of people driving around in Tesla Model S's so I guess we're progressing in our own way...

But we actually have decent internet in most of Portland. Just not where I live I presume.

This won't help in the slightest. If you can't even get a result on Speed Test, it isn't them throttling you. Also, if they are throttling you due to the data you're using (rather than specifically throttling certain sites), that same amount of data will still be going through the VPN and they will still throttle.

Alrighty. The VPN worked, kinda. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3765649915

I'm nowhere near Comcasts advertised speed but I'm somewhere...

The server is in CA so the Ping makes sense.

yeah, all sites are throttled. Look at the newest post here, it sorta solved things... kinda. Speed difference is insane now, but I'm still not at 50+...
