wait till the 980 its better to have one single powerful graphics card and then upgrade later if you need more power, although if the prices of 780s plummet it might be a much better option to buy a 2nd 780

I'll sell you my 780 so I can buy a 980 to play games at a glorious resolution of 720p :P

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I would wait till the 980 is formally announced with pricing, performance and everything. If it ends up being 499$ like the rumors are saying, then I'd sell the 780 and sli 980s.

If the 780 drops to say, $300, scoop up a 2nd 780.  Heck, you could maybe even find a used one for that price now.

This is assuming you already have a capable PSU.

Even at $500, I'd take the second 780. I'm hoping the asus 780 drops by a significant margin so I can sli *prays* ^_^

@eLucid @I/O

The 780 is already down to $400 after rebates on Newegg right now.

Sure, $300 is optimistic, but we are heading in that direction.

I have a 750W

That works.

2x 780s are going to provide you with more raw power than a single 980.  Thing is, you currently only have a single 60Hz monitor, at least according to your profile.  So a single 780 is already cutting it.  I would only go SLI if you were upgrading monitors.

Yeah, I need to upgrade my profile. I now have a An Asus 1440p monitor. It works but the extra Vram i feel will help in the future. I still have the 1080P but I use it for college homework, twitter, streaming making videos etc.

I also use it as a virtual machine, which is kind of cool but it is off topic.

I *think* that you will be ok with 2x 780s.  I am pretty sure that you will be with 1440p.  Check out benchmarks comparing 3GB to 6GB SLI 780s and go from there. I know for single cards at 1440p that 6GB vs 3GB provides as much as 10fps gains in some games.  If the performance gain is noticeable going from 3GB to 6GB in SLI at 1440p, then maybe a single 980 is in your best interest, otherwise, 2x 780s will be the more cost-effective and powerful option.

EDIT I'm kind of curious now to see some benchies of SLI 780s 3GB vs. 6GB on 1440p.

Unless it is a heavily modded skyrim it should not be a massive difference. I will wait until more info comes out, just wanted to know what other people were thinking.

Look through this review, it compares a 780 3GB to a 780 6GB to an R9 290X w/ 4GB @ 2560 x 1600.  You might be surprised how the additional VRAM increases FPS in some games, and allows for higher settings.  This is for single card though.  I need to find some SLI benchmarks.  If you find any, please share because I am thinking of bumping up to 1440p, but am kind of undecided what to do with my 3GB 780.  I am really regretting not doing the Step-Up program when I had the chance.

You can test it by changing the resolution to 1440p. You can add that as a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel. If it does not do as well as you want then upgrade. I think it is called super sampling or something like that.

I assume you know how to do that, if not message me i can show you

What I would do would depend on how much the price of 780s drop when the 980 comes out, how much I could sell the 780 for, and how good the 980 performs, and whether I already have a PSU in place to handle SLI. Paradoxically the more the price of 780s drop, the less you will be able to sell your 780 for.

It looks like the 980 is only going to be marginally better than the 780 TI, to the point some OC'd 780 tis may still beat it in some games. This means 2 780s will destroy one 980 in benchmarks. The only benefit to the 980 would be that it might run a lot cooler than a 780 and draw less power, making it more preferable for SLI. That and the extra gig of VRAM.
