Upgrade to 8 or 16 GB of ram

Jakoob

Going to upgrade sometime during winter and I was wondering if I should bite the bullet and get 16GB. My rig is used for essentially 90% gaming and 10% web browsing, document editing etc. See as how more new games are using 8gb and ddr4 has been released, would it be a good idea to jump to 16.

if you can afford it you might aswell, games are becoming more and more demanding so its worth it so you wont have to upgrade again in a year or so

For just gaming 8Gb is fine but 16Gb will help your system last longer. I used to have an 8Gb gaming laptop and I never had RAM problems.

My Build

Wrong only X99 takes DDR4 so DDR3 will not be discontinued because only one platform supports it

If you cant afford 16GB all at once, use an 8GB stick and add another later. If not, 8 should be enough, what games are you playing?

I'd say getting 16gb is better. 8 is good for gaming but it's getting to the point where developers are starting to want more. Plus if you want some wiggle room in terms of doing things in the background while playing a game (ie playing a game on one screen with a movie running on the other), you may want the extra ram.

Depending on your motherboard and memory speed and timings you can probably keep the existing modules and add a 2x4GB kit to give you 10/12GB(?).

Playing a bit of marvel hero's and that game requires 6gb of ram to run properly. I think I'll go with the 16GB, for longevity's sake.

If money is not an issue, get 16GB. Also, don't bother with high frequency memories if you're not gonna OC quite a bit.

Also, as posted above, DDR4 doesn't make sense unless your mobo supports it.
