Question 1: Compaq Deskpro EN

I got an older Compaq Deskpro EN a couple months ago, and I'm just now getting around to trying to install Windows 2000 Professional back on it. Everything went very smooth, and it even recognized my 120GB HDD with no problems. But... I don't know what model it is to get drivers. There is a sticker on the inside of the case, if that means anything. I attatched the picture to this post.

The side closest to the motherboard says CT: L364A0AA4L01GF

The side farthest away says 175762-001

Question 2: Windows 2000/XP and the 'Net

With that same Compaq, I was considering throwing more hard drives in it and using it as a fairly basic home file server (or NAS, whichever you feel like calling it). But, since both OSes are EOL, is there a way to make them accessible by other computers in the network without being able to connect to the Internet, per say? I'll be using a program called HFS for it.

My advice is to scan that motherboard for any kind of sticker or number to lead to some drivers.

Do you think you can help with the second question? ;)

For the first, look some where for the serial and/or model number, usually on the back of the computer case, OR grab it from the BIOS. Most likely the model number in this case, from Compaq's website will be needed if you were to do a search for any specific drivers etc..

The second question if you were to do a NAS in your home I would prefer using "FreeNAS" if you wanted to re-perpose that machine you are using some new life into it. :)   Give it a shot and if you run into any problems let us know!

The only thing I can help you with in the second question is it's "per se" and not "per say" as everyone puts.

Meh.

Do you think it would run okay on a PIII 733MHz and with only 512MB of RAM?

You can try but with that age in technology your server would eat up that RAM super fast as servers LOVE RAM lol.  The minimum requirement for any server including FreeNAS would be 2GB if you wanted to stream anything like video or to extensive File Transfers.  If you were to find an older version of FreeNAS or NAS4Free it might be able to run, OK, but gotta remember that your Processor is on the slooooooow side as well. ;) I hope this helps.

Yeah, video streaming and HUGE file transfers will be happening fairly often. Thanks. :)
