I am looking for a software that will sort my library of movies and display them in a nice way with information like a plot outline and what genres it would belong to.
Kind of like XBMC only that I want it for desktop use, meaning that I don't want that fullscreen stuff and horrible UI you find in XBMC (yes I had a look at some skins but they were pretty awkward to use as well).
I have had a look at Plex as well, but I did not find it to be what I want, because there is a lot of stuff there I don't need and it is somewhat proprietary (the thing is supposed to be a server you access from other devices). Additionally for use on a desktop it runs in a browser. Not an efficient solution.

If anyone knows of any other software or a XBMC fork that is meant to be used on a desktop, please tell me.

TL;DR: looking for movie sorting and browsing software for desktop use that is not XBMC or Plex. (preferably free, open source)

*edit:  on 2nd thought, nevermind.  You said that you don't want full screen stuff, and that is what this is.  Really it is an OS, not just a program.  so I don't think this is what you're looking for.

I'm using openELEC for a raspberry pi, but I see there are a few different versions of it available for other hardware.

It is a ui for the client rPi which gets streamed content from plexmedia server.  Now I know you didn't want a plex client but maybe this openelec offers you features that fit your needs better than the standard plex client.  might be worth checking out.

Plex Media Server. It runs in a browser, but also has a desktop application you can use. And you can watch videos on the same computer the server is hosted on.

e: Nevermind.

If you eliminate Plex and XBMC, there aren't many others.

Couchpotato for movies and sickbeard for tv shows. It just sorts your movies and tv shows (it also have ways to download for you, if you integrate a torrent program or sabnzbd).

It doesn't play your files. Set up a separate share or use vlc or your favourite media player.
