[US] Pentium G3258 - $47

Faceman

You can do a lot with this cpu in gaming; it's a steal just for a little something to get you a playable rig before broadwell comes out, which is why I bought it.

Kinda why i bought mine. I wanted to start a Z97 platform, and working around my budget i got other parts first. And for an Intel 'budget' dual core thats unlocked, its a no brainer. I have it at 4.5GHz, only adjusted multiplier havent messed with any other setting and its running like a champ. I havent had enough time to play many games just Dirt 3 (got with the free bundle with my GPU) i know its not a super high demanding game, but i get an FPS average around 120 (R9 280)

My intention was to swap this out this winter/spring for a 4790K, hopefully the prices will drop 'some' when Broadwell comes out. Or maybe even get a Broadwell :)

What it comes down to is:

Intel dual core UNLOCKED

Easy OC

Good performance

1150 socket

great temps even with stock cooler

and....PRICE.

Perfect chip for someone on a low budget that wants to build a gaming machine. Money saved on the CPU could go to a better GPU. And which AMD chip is comparable for this price/performance? Nothing thats going to keep up with this CPU. Not being an Intel fanboy, just comparing.

hmm... Lets compare it to the i5 4690k, shall we?

Pentium g3258

3.2ghz dual core, no HT

Unlocked multiplier

Passmark score: 3967

Price: $47-$75

i5 4690k

3.5ghz Quad core no HT

Unlocked multiplier

Passmark score: 7741

Price: $199-$259

the i5 costs 3-4 times what the pentium costs, but yet performs less than twice as much. for value the Pentium wins hands down.

Now on to gaming:

watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6LUufXCPDM

And this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUlS5Q7tEJI

And this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4pwKrvfKBs

And we come to the same conclusion. the Pentium offers about half the performance of an i5 in cpu intensive games with 1/3-1/4 of the cost.

note: most of these videos are comparing the pentium to the i7 4790k, which is more expensive than the i5 (obviously). However, in most games the i5 and the i7 perform within a couple fps of each other with occasional dips from the i5. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6isBItgobvI)
