Cable sleeving or extensions

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

It is MUCH easier to buy extensions. Also, you're using a non-modular PSU so sleeving them yourself will be far more complicated then it already is.

If you have no previous experience with modding PSUs and cables, definitely go with sleeved extensions. (it will cost about the same as sleeving them yourself)

Is it better to self sleeve cables or is it better to just buy "presleeved" extensions for them? i am using a non-modular power supply and am very new to any kind of modding :/

its my inexperience that is drawing me towards getting the extensions rather than doing it myself despite the extra cost.

thanks in advance,

Milo

Depends on how much effort you want to put in.

Sleeved extensions are literally plug and play and can look very professional.

Sleeving your own cables is a big job, especially if you do not have a modular power supply and they might not look all that good if you don't take your time

Unless you have a lot of patience and spare time doing it your self is not recommended. You could just get extension or you could buy full custom cables. Depending on your power supply and lengths Icemodz could do it for about 140$

Depends really, if you do not have to buy the tools, then yes, sleeving them yourself is the way to go, but if you have to buy the tools, you might as well get someone to sleeve them for you. The price would come close to being the same either way.

Well if you get ext obviously you will have to deal with more cables in your case, so think where you will be putting them cables. Having non modular PSU will add even more cables in, so yeah. I've done some stupid excuse for sleeving by just wrapping the cable with some black ductape, and it worked perfectly, i'd recommend this for a beginner.

If you are inexperienced I would highly recommend presleeved extensions. Sleeving your own cables can be difficult and requires a bit of knowledge and background in electrical.

Rubbish. Sleeving cables requires absolutely no electrical know-how, the only thing it requires is time. Whether or not you like sleeving cables is a subjective matter but I quite enjoy it. Sleeving cables yourself is one of those few things you can do to really have your build stand out from the rest. You will find everything you need on mdpc-x.com including all the knowledge you need to get an unparalleled sleeving job as well as the best service you can possibly imagine. Nils is a great guy.

Space wont be much of an issue here as it wont be in a case. well it will but not a case case. it'll be built into a desk. ill be designing and building it with a friend over the coming months/weeks. its gonna be water cooled and UV LED'd and all sexy and shit. sorry, of topic.

but thanks to everyone who replied! looks like mdpc-x.com is currently moving (like many other vendors... coincidence?) right now but ill keep checking.

Doing anything with wiring it's recommended you know at least the basics of electrical. Knowing how to clip wires, strip away the protective tubing and other things are all basic things in electrical.

And you need knowledge of neither of these to sleeve your own cables...

Depends really, if you want to shorten the cables since they may be too long than it's a necessary step.

Sleeving cables and making custom cables is two very different things. Nils @ MDPC-X however also offers the appropriate tools needed to create custom cables, and the only knowledge you need to use said tools is shared via a very simple guide. Why do you want so bad to make it appear harder than it is?

Nils is on break at the moment, but he will be back in time.

How is basic electrical knowledge hard? Its much easier to do extensions than sleeve your own cables and that's what he was asking.

also, i just found out that PlastiDip can be used on cables and if i can get UV green/UV purple stuff that would be braw!

I'd personally just go with extensions, since it's a low end psu that you very well may replace down the road. So, extensions last forever--well, at least until hardware specs change.

now where can i get cheap (but not suspiciously cheap) extensions?

Silverstone PP07 extensions are reasonably cheap, as are Bitfenix Alchemys.

You literally said yourself that it would be difficult. Buying something, be it presleeved cable sets or extensions, will always be easier, but the result will be so much better if you do it yourself (and take your time). Seeing how it takes absolutely no prior knowledge of anything to do so means that to me doing anything else makes absolutely no sense.

any idea when he'll be back?

I really don't know. He could be back tomorrow or it could be a month.
