so here's a question. I need an OS for my system. I have a windows 7 disc lying around, should I just install that? or buy windows 8 bearing in mind windows 9 should be being released soon. Also I quite like metro and all that fluff I have a laptop that runs 8.1 and I got no problems, also I read somewhere or heard, idk that windows 8 is better for gaming. So what do you guys think I should do?

If you have a license for WIN7 just go with that. If you don't then there is nothing that would hold you from going Win8.

What are you running atm? If I were you I would wait for win9, mainly because I have no need to switch to Win8 from Win7 which I already have installed, your scenario is probably different however.

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

Windows 9 is expected to come out next year. The Preview (alpha/beta) is expected to come with an announcement on Sept 30th.

So buying a new version of Windows, now, is a bit a waste of money.

Windows 8 is better for gaming, however, more for older hardware as the OS is leaner and more optimized then Win7.

With modern hardware it is negligible, not worth paying money just for that fact, if it is the only thing that interests you among a long list of features Win8 provides.

The exception is with modern AMD CPU which will benefit a lot from Windows 8, with some demanding games.

In your case, stick with Win7 as you have that, and wait for Win9.

If you don't mind doing daily backups, and re-install the OS, and expect complete failure, you can jump in in the Win9 Preview when it comes out, and experience the new Windows, provide feedback, and watch features at the end user level develop over time, and bug fixes, at every preview release.
