Metro 2033 ( normal) framedrops

I do not know whether this belongs in the  GPU section or not so if it belongs there will a mod please move it.

I have a GTX EVGA 780 reference overclocked to 1150 base clock.

For some reason i get massive frame drops in Metro 2033. It goes from 80 FPS at 1080 P down to 30 for a few seconds then to 120 and then it repeats. It generally stays at around 100 but it varies so much all the time. To where it is the most annoying game to play because of the drops. If i boost it to 1440p i get the exact same Frame dips, It never goes below 30. even at 720p i get drops to 30. It is so strange. Also, my GPU only uses a max of 91% of it's power when i have it set to 104. My 780 never goes above 71c even though i have it set to throttle at 76c.   Once again this only happens in this game. Is it just poorly optimized? Although it does look nice it is not Metro:Last Light.

Runs fine for me mate, and my rig is a lot weaker than yours. Btw, i presume you are running a legit, patched copy? Because the base game is known for stuttering on some setups.

That's strange, it plays fine on my rig (Not nearly as high average FPS, but it doesn't dip.)

I used to have issues with dipping in games when my OC was too high (On my CPU, but I can imagine it happening on a GPU as well).

Also, have you tried it with physX off? I doubt it'd make too much of a difference with that rig, but ya never know.

It is usually fine, but at parts it goes to 30.

Yes it is legal.

Alright  I will set it to 80. I even looked in the config files to see if anything was out of the ordinary but it is fine. Even my software engineering professor is stumped.

I have it makes no difference. On Metro Last light turning off advanced Physx gave me a Huge boost in FPS

Are you using V-sync ?.

and yes Metro 2033 ( non redux ) are known to be pretty hard to run.

I did not even see V-Sync in the options menu.

Well, what you could do (Potentially a bit more time consuming) is try the game out with the settings at their bare minimum and see if it still dips. If it does, then it's probably not a specific setting, it's probably the game (Which then you can try things like verifying the cache or trying other updates, things like that) or hardware. If it was hardware though, then you'd probably see similar frame dips in other games. Have you tried other games since this has happened in Metro 2033?

Yes, Crysis 3 has no trouble at all. I get great FPS and it only drops to 30 when it should ( it is crysis )

Tomb raider is fine. I went and tried older games like Crysis 2 and it had no drops or anything strange.

Ill lower everything real quick.

It still dips to 40.

But now it goes from 220-40

instead of 120-30

I had this same issue, although a lot worse being 40FPS with 2FPS dips lol. Don't worry about it, this is the old non-patched Metro: 2033.

This, being a known issue since its launch, hasn't been fixed up until now. Then they released Metro: LL which was improved a lot. It's sad that they didn't fix 2033 and just decided to release the same game with a better engine along with a new price tag.

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."
