Do NOT spend $500 on a Headset, Ever... 

 

You have alot of Options if you go with a Headphone + Mic combo.

 

Do you prefer Closed or Open, do they need to be portable, what sound signature do you like, etc

Uhh...pretty much all of them are under 500.

500 bucks will get you quite a few options of some good sounding headphones. More than half of them are open backed though, because in that price level, the demands for open headphones are bigger in number. 

 

Sony MDR-1R sounds quite nice. Full-closed back, but got nice wide soundstage.
