Get a 290 but not ASUS. Asus R9 290s have gtx coolers on them and perform quite poorly on vrm temps.
I'd get a Sapphire 290 tri-x or vapor-x
They are the best from my personal experience

I'm getting the entire system from PcCaseGear, Melbourne, Australia. The DCII & Tri-X are both $499 AU

Get the Tri-X

Depends on the resolution. If you're at 1080p, the 280x will be just fine for most games. If you're at a higher resolution you should probably go with the r9 290

Ill be pushing 1080p across 3 monitors but may be pushing higher resolutions to projectors as i my run it in an entertainment center.

The 290 is what you need, you might even end up buying a 2nd later on down the road.

Okay, while researching i've discovered that i can save $50 by going a Gigabyte Windforce 290 over a Sapphire Tri-x 290. Is the Windforce cooler as good as its said to be?

Get a 290, you will regret not getting it if you get the 280x, not that there's anything wrong with a 280x, but it's worth spending abit more (I'm talking from experience of owning both)

The Tri X cooler will be slightly better but the windforce cooler isn't too bad, but I had a 280x Windforce and couldn't adjust core voltage, and with it's factory overclock it was also running kinder high, so if you're looking to overclock get the Tri X, if not then save yourself $50 (Maybe the 290 Windforce allows adjusting Core voltage though I'm not sure, look into it)

It is fair, I put the fastest model of the 'older' gpu up against the slowest model of the 'newer' gpu, this shows the 'gap' at its most minimum it could possibly be and even so it is still a big win for the 290 over the 280x.

you cant get reference 280x's, I know you 'could' get reference 7970 but you would be hard pressed to get your hands on one of them these days, and a vapor-x 290 is either the fastest or second fastest 290 you can get, so the difference would be huge, plus its super expensive so not many people would get it, the Tri-X is much more common and I have already done a reference 290 vs tri-x 290 video so if the people wanted to see the difference they could.
