I am looking into building a computer, and I was originally going to go with these parts:

CPU: AMD A10 6800K

GPU: AMD R9 270x or 280

RAM: 8gb 1600 mHz ddr3 RAM

Just recently I got an offer from my cousin for him to give me his old gtx 660. I am going to accept the offer, but I was wondering whether I should not buy the 270x/280 and spend more money on other parts, or whether I should try to use both graphics cards at once. My worry about this is that it would add a lot of heat to the system, and possibly reduce the speed of both, losing even more speed. The final option is that I just use one of the AMD cards.

What should I do?

The 660 should be cooler than the 270/280...

Well if you went with the GTX 660 that would save you quite a bit of money, but you won't be able to play the latest games on max settings or anything like that and expect it to be playable.

Getting an APU and a discrete card is kind of a waste of money. You'd be better of with an Athlon 760k. As far as the GPU question, you can't use both at once for a performance increase, so you'd be wasting power and giving off more heat than needed. If you're getting the 660 for free, then go for it. Also, my brother has had some driver issues with AMD in the past, so i'm a little weary of recommending them, but if you feel like you want AMD, go with the 280 if you have the money.

If you have a discrete GPU, you don't need an APU. You could get either an Athlon 760K if you're on a tight budget, or, an i5 4440, if you have the money, or, a FX-6300 if you need 6 cores for 3D rendering or other stuff.

If you have a 660 for free, then go with it, you'll save some money. If you were buying a graphics card, you should get the cheapest R9 270X or a R9 280.

So go with i5 4690k and Z97 board and yuo will be good. Upgrade GPU later.
