Hard Drive slowness

Go to solution Solved by Mooshi,

Go to power management in control panel and set hard drives to never sleep.

Hi everyone, having a bit of a problem here

So my rig has 2 Hard Drives and one SSD, Wincrap is on the SSD, all the programs are on the 1Tb Seagate drive & games are on a 500Gb Seagate drive.

Problem is, whenever i have to launch something on the Hard drive, or when some program tries to access one of the hard drives, i hear that "vroom" of the HDD starting.

It's very annoying because it creates a delay (10 seconds sometimes more), and i don't understand why the hard drives (both) are put into ""sleep mode"" every 5 minutes

Any suggestions ?

edit : it does that whenever i put the rig in sleep or shutdown it, it takes freaking 10 minutes to shutdown because i hear one hard drive starting then stopping, then the other one as well, then it shuts down. Very annoying.

By default if they are not used for a set time, they power down, it saves both energy, and increases the longevity of the drives. Either deal with it, or increase the time before it spins down (i have it set to 15 minutes), or disable it completely. But unless you have something like those red NAS drives, then they will wear out much faster.

You can alter the setting in your power options.

Alright just changed that to 30 minutes, I guess if i disable it then one of them will probably explode and put the house on fire

Thanks everyone, man the response time on this forum will always amaze me

If you tend to shut down and start up your PC a couple times each day, then it may be better to keep the drives running constantly. But if like me you keep your rig on for more than say 10 hours a day (my rig rarely gets shut down tbh) then it's better to set them to spin down, reasonably around ~20 minutes. As having them spinning at full speed for such extended periods isn't the best idea. And neither is having them spin up and spin down constantly, it's best to find the middle ground based on how often your pc boots up and shuts down.

It's actually fine to set sleep time to never. My WD Blue runs cool and I don't hear mine in spite of it always running. That delay from waking from sleep constantly is annoying.

Edit: Depends on case usage. Since I access my hdd constantly, I keep it running.
