I want to make custom pc's for people in my town. Would it be worth it starting a little micro business?

Probably not a way of making much money, there is very little profit in computer hardware, and nobody is going to pay you much for a build and you would need to be doing it constantly to make any real money

As a side job project maybe, but starting up something official costs a lot of money and time

Some people have money to spend and don't know the prices.I have a dude that is making pc's for all kind of people and he usually sell them about 10-30% higher. You can make money from this but not very much

Beware of him that is slow to anger; for when it is long coming, it is the stronger when it comes, and the longer kept. Abused patience turns to fury.

It depends: is there a local big store that sells prebuilts? If yes, chances are that you won't make enough money to keep going. Unless you do it in your own home, then it's completely free for you to do and hence any money you can make is worth it. Unless you need the time for your "actual" job, because you aren't going to live off of it most likely.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

That is true, but you will need to sell multiple systems every day just for it to be a sustainable job

Normal people buy PC's from walmart and best buy and they almost always come paired with a decent monitor and a warranty. You can't really compete with that because going to the store and leaving with a pc/laptop is easier than going back and forth with someone telling them what you need and then waiting for them to order parts and build a pc.

I'm still in College so it wouldn't be a full-time job anyway but just a way to get some money.

It could make you a little money if there are people nearby who want a system built. There is an element of trust involved and I've found most people go with larger companies that give them warranties even when that is the worse decision for them, so you will find it hard to convince people to trust you. Also you need to be prepared to do far more work than you expect as people who buy systems from you will come back to you if anything goes wrong, and I mean anything.

It would be worth having it as a side job rather than your full time job. It would be better if you sold your skill as PC repair, maintenance and builder than just a builder.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Actually starting an LLC (Limited Liability Company) is surprisingly easy and not expensive. I have owned an LLC for almost 10 years for tax reasons.

But for the OP it is probably still not worth it to start one. You will have a lot of trouble finding people who would rather hire you over going to best buy and buying an HP. Competing with established brands that have customer recognition is going to be a tough road.

Yeah but I meant it will cost money buying in stock, which is not the highest margin stuff in the world, and then even if you charge a pretty hefty build fee building the computer, unless you have a long stream of customers you might aswell just get a normal job

As a side project for a few extra bucks, it makes sense, perhaps go from there if you are successful but I would invest time and money into something like that, not if you expect to make serious money

As you say, too much competition, who wants some young random lad to build their PC when the shiny superstore around the corner has it, or they can get a big name custom one built for them
