R9 290X Lightning VRM cooling

Go to solution Solved by Freaky_spider,

is monitoring software accurate? Actually I don't believe much like realtemp or similar kind of things.

what I know is temp on software is just a guess. Calculated by Tjmax and voltage. Is this only applies to CPU? or same with GPU?

nono, lightning cards have equal temp probes

they might not be 100% accurate, but its not gonna be that far off

note that VRM generally gets hot because there is little area to cool it, and it can handle high temps, the ones a lightning has are rated at 105°C (or 115°C, cant remember correctly)

Hi guys. I'm new here. "lured" here by nice videos of Linus.

Recently I bought a shiny MSI R9 290X Ligntning which is hot monster graphics card.

but what I heard from my friend is R9 290X with reference cooler has a heat problem with VRMs.

He said like this: not with proper VRM cooling, 290X will throttle down its clock or result in decreased lifespan of a whole card.

But I know that "Trifrozer" cooling solution of lightning VGA series are way better than reference cooler.

So my point is, do I have to worry about VRM temperature of my lightning when it's under heavy load of gaming?

and I'll OC it a little bit like core clock 1100~1150Mhz. while trying not to tamper with voltage.

Will VRM temp be a problem when it comes to total lifespan of the card? I want to be with this card as long as I can.

You should not have  aproblem with the throttling downn. MSI Lightning trifrozer are fucking epic coolers, (i dont own one but im jealous of my friend with a 780 lightning :S) and hes overclocked it to stupid numbers before getting any problems.

It should be fine, its not the reference coolers so MSI will have addressed the issue.

Planning on trying StarCitizen (Highly recommended)? STAR-NR5P-CJFR is my referal link

Any lightning card is solid. You'll be fine, your VRM's oughtt to be nice and chilly

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

Ah. Thanks for advice. Surely it is prepared for LN2 situations.
