One of my Tech-Associates took in a computer last night that was remotely accessed by someone in india, and sure enough they tried to scam her into apparently giving credit card information so they can 'refund money' to it and also perform service (which literally makes zero sense to me...) However, my tech left a note on the bench for me to check a log of the conversation that was saved. I couldn't believe my eyes, and neither could every one in my store I showed it to. I guess what she did when she got freaked out was just pull the battery and take it into my store. It's hilarious, yet weird, take a read at this conversation:

So any poor people are forced into jobs like these. There just arent any other good alternatives available. Not our place to judge

There are always alternatives. Farming for instance. Used to be a time, long ago, when there was no such thing as a job.

This is more likely.

farming isn't an easy thing to do... especially in India. As an Indian, I can tell you that A. land(especially agricultural land) is very hard to come by, because, either it's too expensive, or the amount of bribes you have to pay to government officials makes it too expensive. B. The seeds available to small scale farmers are natural seeds. The HYV types are expensive, require shitloads of fertlizers and drain nutrients and water very quickly. They have only succeeded in giving more profit in areas of North India where they have one of the most fertile stretches of soil by giving one half more than they had and in very rare cases, double. C. Rains in India are always subject to change. These few years there hasn't been much rain during the monsoon and so there has been a high amount of crop failures and as a result of which, numerous farmer suicides. D. Farming isn't a full time job and only pays a measly amount, if you're lucky, once or twice in a year if you choose to plant different crops every season. (We have kharif(monsoon) and rabi(summer)) so they have to find other jobs in other farms or small shops where they get a very measly salary. So, when they don't get jobs, they turn to taking loans. Sometimes, their crop fails and they have no money the entire year and still have to feed their families and repay that loan.

Farming in India isn't as easy as it is in America where you have huge ass harvesters, planters, threshers, genetically modified crops, acres upon acres of land, etc.

Yes, there are alternatives. But, there is no job security in India. You might get hired one day and get fired literally the next day if you don't work under a registered company. It's even harder to find a job when your country has the second highest population in the world.

I'm sure that this person definitely does not have any morals but there are reasons behind why some of the poorer people get into other (sometimes illegal) means of making money. I do not support it(scamming, etc.) by any means but I'm just trying to get people to not look at India as some country filled with scammers, telemarketers, and the likes.

you get pretty cheap homemade cigarettes called "beedi" and the prices vary for those. The cheapest branded cigarettes are Gold Flake 64mm 10packs for 25 rupees. The premium ones go for 100 for a 25 pack but it's actually good since we have heavy taxes on cigarettes to reduce the amount of smokers and to make people quit.

So at premium, about 1.20? thats pretty damned cheap. In the US a pack of marlboro's where I live is about $5.00 US. in places like new york it's something like 10 bucks for a 20 pack.

What a load of BS.  There are always alternatives from committing fraud.  It is EXACTLY our place to judge.  I get so sick of the PC (the bad PC not the normal PC we talk about here) brigade acting like because someone is not in a western society we cannot judge them on their actions.  Yes,  we can and I will.  Any person willing to scam another for money is a bad person, period.

From your description farming in India is not much different than farming in the US.  There is a reason in the US the majority of farms are controlled by giant corporate interests.  The family farmer is almost non existent now in the US.

Thanks to our dear government actually paying farmers not to farm, that and ridiculous EPA regulations, wage regulation, taxes, etc. Increased regulation increases the cost of doing business, even if that "business" is farming food for yourself to live off of.

which is good. Farmers are hired by such corporations and this shows job security. The family farmer is non-existent because of that big drought you guys had in the early 1800s which made almost all farmers give up hope and leave to find jobs elsewhere. That's also partly the reason you have so many "Smiths" who were generally craftsmen by trade. India was used as a huge Indigo and opium plantation by the British and so Farming was almost 93% of the people's occupation. Now the tertiary sector is booming because farmers are simply not paid enough.

A little over exagerated on the 1800's part but it is certainly part of the equation.

My main point to your post was that really it might not be as different here as you believe.  Farming is a hard living for the small timers everywhere you go.
