Best to stick to the same brand and model imo, you can mix and match but it'll end up causing instability.

It doesn't have to be, but it's best to go for the exact same kit if possible. Mixing kits (even if it's the exact same model) isn't guaranteed to work, but it's more likely to work with similar kits. Most important thing is to make sure the CAS timings and speed are the same.

If you want to be sure they work perfectly together then yes. If you can't find the exact same model, try to get something as similar as possible from the same manufacturer. Maybe higher frequency or something.

This is very true! If you're buying new RAM, ensure that the CAS and frequency are the same!

Shouldn't be a large problem if you aren't gonna OC, though.

I don't think it matters so as long as you get the exact same type of RAM. For example, you could have a Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz memory kit and then purchase a Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz kit and you should be fine. :)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

What 2 4GB Sticks + an 8GB Stick will that work?

If you aren't OCing, I think anything with the same CAS timings and frequency will do :)

My brother sent his to a shop (before I got into the PC thing) and they just put more memory in. He currently has 1x4 and 1x2gb DIMMs in there, all running at the same frequency.

Ended up getting Hyper X, person at the store helped me pick out a pair that was compatible and will work fine with my current set. So far so good.

Same colors?

Original 8GB was black, new 8GB is Blue. Doesn't really matter to much to me but will look better when I remove the 8 months worth of dust this weekend.
