I'm building a computer for my dad. He wants to play some of the latest games. Nothing hardcore just something relaxing. He has a Intel core 2 Quad 2.5 Ghz now with 3GB of ram and a GTS 250. So it's quite old.

The motherboard I bought has been around for awhile but it should match up well with the other components.

Parts:

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

16GB Kingston HyperX Fury 1866Mhz

AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz. I want to try to go up to 4.4 as my max.

Corsair H100i Cooler (likely to be mounted at the top of the Enermax case)

AMD Radeon 280x 3GB

Samsung DVD Burner

eVGA 750w PSU rated at 90% efficiency

Think that's it. It'll be quite a step up from what he had but I want to get a little extra performance out of it if I can get away with it.

If anyone can offer some thoughts and settings on how I can get it to 4.4Ghz stable I'd appreciate it. It would be a great benefit knowing what to set once I get all the parts in and the build set up. Once I get windows and everything installed and stable. Then I'd like to use what you guys offer to get to the 4.4Ghz. Why 4.4Ghz? No reason, I want to keep temps down but offer a little bit extra in speed if I can. The H100i should help make things stable.

Thanks everyone.

Not really when ''newer'' version. It doesn't have corsair link etc. It's like a H100 with a thicer radiator.

Nice build I assume all the parts are ordered already? If not i would suggest getting a lower wattage PSU ( and not evga.) unless you want to crossfire. And maybe get a H105/Bequiet dark rock pro 3 instead of H100i

This and 8gb of RAM. If you want to CF later then get an 850w (which will allow for OC head room too) otherwise just a decent 650w.

PC: Corsair C70 Arctic, FX 9370, Corsair H80i, Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3, Corsair Vengence 16gb, Palit JetStream GTX 970, OCZ Vertex 4 128gb and Western Digital Blue 1Tb + 500gb, Antec Gamer 520w

Peripherals: Logitech G19 and SteelSeries Sensei RAW

Toshiba L50-A: i7 4700mq, 8gb, 1TB HDD, GT 740M 2gb

4.4GHz might be achievable on stock voltage on the 8350, so it's simply a case of disabling turbo boost, cpu ratio to 22x and seeing if it's stable :)

Build doesn't look too bad either, I'd have probably dropped the 16GB to 8 and got a 290 myself (unless this is video editing also) and maybe use team blue but either way it should be a nice bump from his old system :)

let us know how you get on with the build :)

I agree, you don't need 16GB for gaming only. Never. Don't go over 8GB unless you're doing something more intensive than playing games.

I tried that on pcpartpicker, but the drop in price from 16GB to 8GB wasn't enough to offset it to the 290. Is the H100i going to work fine. Or is that H105 that much better? I did chose the H80i initially but thought that wasn't going to be enough.

H100i will be fine, the difference is a few degrees at best. And good choice not going for the H80i, from my experience it was 'enough' to cool an FX8320 but the price / performance was pretty poor.

You can also make it less expensive by choosing a different case and PSU.  Also, if you live near a Microcenter, you can pick up the i5 + Z97 for ~ $280 in a combo deal.

If you are willing to watercool an FX processor, you might as well go with Intel.  A more expensive CPU cooler can always be added later, and the Hyper 212 EVO is an incredible cooler for the price.  Make sure temperatures are the only thing holding you back from a higher overclock before investing in expensive water cooling.
