My first attempt - december 2008

This is a topic I should have made ages ago, since this was done back in december 2008. 

 

Please note this was improved over time - did the cable routing, installed more RAM, replaced the 4870X2 for the 660 Ti, installed a custom cooler and replaced that horrible LC Power for a Seasonic G450.

 

The first thing I got after building was Crysis 1, and played it like a boss!

 

Be warned - loads of pictures.

 

The rather lame case - Thermaltake Xaser VI MX. I hate it for not having any proper cable routing holes.

 

Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe, Did well, except for its bad eSATA implementation- it doesn't work well. 

 

2 WD Blue 640 GB drives, had them in RAID 0 before one of them started failing. Now I have 640 GB WD Black instead. 

 

That is indeed a FDD, used it maybe 2 or 3 times, then removed it. 

 

An LC Power LC750... I know, I KNOW ... it failed. Had to be replaced.

 

Why use XP if you can have VISTA?!?!?!

 

Processor: Intel i7 920, pretty beast, pretty expensive. 

 

The yummy stock cooler in all its glory.

Looks good! I was lucky to not get any ESD from building on the conductive wrap.

 

3x1GB sticks of 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. DDR3 used to be HORRIBLY expensive back then.

Apart from the wong dong PSU, nice pc, I had the same memory back on 775.

That was an amazing machine back then. And today with a i7 920 and a GTX 660 TI is still a pretty decent rig.

cable management wasn't that big of a thing back then, also still isn't if your case can't handle it like mine.

On 2008 I was using a Pentium III...

That sucks man

Back then I waas still in high school, had a nice stipendy (nearly 200 €/month I believe) and my parents paid all my expenses... so what do you do with all that excess money if you're a PC enthusiast... I dunno, maybe build a badass new rig?

Nope, when I started my studies in Electrical Engineering, I got first Windows 7 and then 8.1 from MSDNAA/Dreamspark.

 

Since I game on 1920x1200 it's still fine for most games, if I don't push effects too far. The processor is fine, only the GPU could be better, if only funds allowed for more.

But I don't really care for newer titles, since I almost exclusively play Supreme Commander these days.
