I bought an AMD HD6950 about three years ago and it's now living and working in my i5 3570k (4.2GHZ) rig. I was fortunate enough to been given a second HD6950 from a friend that upgraded and have since then crossfired them.

Apart from the odd game that freaks out about dual cards, I've been pretty happy with the performance and have not had microstutter issues since AMD introduced frame pacing.

Problem is, the cards are 1Gb models, so I've been having issues with texture sizes in recent games, usually having to drop the textures a notch from max to stop the stutter.

Now, I play on a TV at 768p and my score in 3dmark11 is about 9000. Would going for a mid-range AMD or Nvidia card be a decent upgrade (like playing max settings at 1080p), or should I hold out till something better comes along?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have a mortgage to pay and a family to look after. It's hard to rationalise a video card purchase unless it's really bloody good and will provide a massive boost compared to what I have...

then you'd be better of sticking to what you have and wait for the next gen of cards and see what they have to offer.

then buy the most price/performance card within your budget.

if you're having money troubles you should wait. The build is plenty good enough for now and I'm sure you'll be able to play just fine by turning down the textures

750 Ti would be a downgrade and the 270 won't not be a big jump in performance

Sell your current card off and try to get a 280X

it would help in the vram aspect only I guess. thats pretty much the only reason why.

a cheap 2gb vram card to tide him over if he really need the vram upgrade.

also, for the OP's case. waiting is a much better option
