Ugh... such high temps

Go to solution Solved by SlaughterSmurf,

There is an exhaust fan above it. The only fan slot left in this case is a 200mm on the side, but I can't install a fan there due to clearance issues with the Hyper 212.

Is there something I can do about this without spending too much? I have a reference (Asus branded) Radeon HD 6870. The fan is noisy at load, and temps are horrible. I have taken off the shroud and cooler, completely cleaned it to the point where I could eat off of it, and re-applied it with the thermal paste that came with my Hyper 212 EVO. I still get around 60 degrees idle and it hits about 90-95 degrees under load (doesn't throttle though), in a room with around 27 degrees ambient temperature. I don't want to spend too much on this card, and I feel that it's just an issue with my case which is an NZXT Phantom, since there's barely any airflow getting to the GPU area. Most of the airflow is in two areas, horizontally across the hard drive cages from the left side of the case to the right side, and from the top of the case, through the CPU cooler, and out the back.

Those are normal temps for a reference 6870 so all you can really do is put a new cooler on it, but that would be around $100, in which case you may as well just save another $100 and get a 270x.

a quick google search says that these are normal temps

I've heard that hitting 90's under load is normal for a reference 6870, which is why I'm not surprised that it doesn't throttle, but I feel that 60 at idle is just way too hot, especially when my notorious-for-being-hot CPU idles at 32.

that seems normal too

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I'd say fill all the fan slots your case has, if it doesn't work maybe get a new one like a cooler master haf 912 which has beast airflow. Otherwise you could try doing something like this...

lol. That'll likely help with noise but I don't know if that'll actually get me very far with a reference cooler in terms of temps.

Damn. Yeah a friend of mine upgraded from his reference 6870 to a 270X as well. An almost new Windforce X3 270X for a hundred bucks off Kijiji. I'll keep an eye out

It depends a lot on the heatsink your gpu has, that guy I took the picture from was actually getting significantly better cooling out of it than reference (it's a gtx 480 btw). If the fans sit perfectly on the heatsink it should have a positive effect. Not saying I necessarily recommend it though :P just do it if you know what you're doing and you are aware of the risks.

those open fan designs cool themselves using the hot air they push out, so without fans aimed at the card to get rid of that air they get very hot, try a table fan aimed against it with the sidepanel open and see the temps drop :P

The guy apparently just wanted to get rid of it. He still had the receipt from when he bought it, and the card was only 2.5 weeks old (but memory express only gives you a week to return), how much could you possibly wear a card even if you did mine it for 2.5 weeks straight?

Yeah, but where I am the cost to get one of those is the same as how much the card is worth. lol

I just put it out there as an option, replacing the card entirely is also an option and it can be argued that it's the better one but the aftermarket VGA cooler would solve this issue I'm sure.
