GPU Update from GTX 465 Help

Hallo Guy,

im a IT Student but sadly i have not that much experience with Hardwaren than Configuration of the Hardware. So i could really need some help for a Upgrade.

I now use:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition @ Stock 3,2 Ghz (but i guess i will overclock soon to at least 3,5)

Asus M4N68T-M-LE-V2

2xGSkill F3-10666CL9-4GBNT (Total of 8GB)

1x Samsung Evo 840 128GB SSD (i know it doesnt outperform its potencial on SATA2 but the performance Boost is quit nice)

1x Segate 2TB 7,200 RPM HDD

Nvidia GTX 465 1GB GDDR5 RAM

+ 2 Monitors(1920x1080 & 1600x1200)

For Games i only use the FullHD Monitor

This Hardware is now quiet old but the CPU is still good enough for me. I do normal Office Work, Some Photoshop and sometimes Videoencoding (but if i do, its not a Problem to wait a bit longe till the Job is done) & Gaming

Im not the Guy how needs to play all the Games on Ultra Settings but i like to play whatever Game i want.

I recently finished Saints Row 4 and i notice sometimes (only if more than 40 Enemys spawn at the same time) that frames are dropping below playable (i would guess 12 fps)

Im now looking forward to play the new Tomb Raider but doesnt want any Framedrop and i dont want to turn the Graphic to minimum and 720p if you know what i mean. So im a Student and dont have that much money and i dont want to Upgrade the whole PC cause USB 3.1 and DDR4 are coming quiet soon and i dont want to upgrade twice in 3 years.

So i want to wait with the Mainboard and CPU upgrade till the new standards are in place and only want the Upgrade the Graphic Card. That seems not very difficult in the first place but i dont want to spent to much for power my CPU und Mainboard cant process.

So i thought of the R9 270x

Would it be Bottlenecking like hell? Or is this Card good for my reasons or is there any better with less Bottlenecking and cheaper, because i guess if i upgrade in the Future i need a new GPU as well.

The R9 270x is price wise right at the above end of my budget with 170€ for the Asus Card (in Germany)

But im a bit worried that those 170€ would spend badly because the card is to good for the rest of the config, if you know what i mean.

Thanks for your help,

Daniel

If you are planning on upgrading the rest of the system in 3 years then I would either grab a stop gap GPU (something you intend to upgrade when you do the rest of your system), or go hell for leather and get the best you can and plan on sticking with it for 5 years give or take.  Ergo either 750ti or a 290 (780Ti if they are cheap where you are).

No, but for the price you may want to get a 270 instead of a 270X. Same chip, just doesn't overclock as well as the X counterpart.

A 270/X seems like a big enough gap from a 465 to wait until the OP can do an entire system upgrade.

I was just thinking of something a little cheaper without going too far down.

265?

that'd work just as well.   Just need to be sure freesync/gsync is on the cards in the near future as the 265 is only GCN1.0.

I would argue that those features are useless for a computer meant to hold over until time to upgrade it to something more "permanent."

I would agree, I just think it's worth noting that's all.

Depends on the priorities of the user. I have no experience with any of those technologies so in my eyes they're not essential to what I do and will not, at this moment, affect any of my decisions.

I just thought because he is giving some thought and planning into how and when he upgrades to make the most of each new tech release (ddr4 and USB 3.1) that he likes to be thorough, thus the more information the merrier.

IE: DDR4 costs more than an arm and a leg

well then, maybe money is not an issue and he'll just get an r9 295x

But that 955, man that thing can get slow... Why not go with an entire system upgrade if that's the case? :P

And throughout all our banter, not once has the OP replied. So depressing.

In that case I recommend either a 750ti or r7 265, for now or go all out and get an r9 290.  -de jah vu

Hey Guys,

thanks for your help!

So i compared prices for all Asus Cards.

The GTX 750 TI is around 130€

The R7 265X is around 150€

The R9 270 is around 160€

The R9 270X is around 170€

The R9 290 is around 400€

So i guess i will stick with the 270X. I guess its the best Bang-for-the-Bug ;)

Thanks :)
