I repair/fix/diagnose computers for a living. I run across some things that just baffle me and Google doesn't have an answer for it. I think it would be fun to throw out real world situations I've run into (or know of) and see if anyone can accurately diagnose or even list the steps to repair it. These can range from software to hardware. Strongly encourage people to post up their own ideas.

Example:

Q: The computer boots and posts normally, but before reaching the Windows Logo loading screen, goes to a black screen and does not reboot or do anything. Hard drive scan was clean, chkdsk/sfc clean, restore point didn't work.

A: Externally scan the hard drive and came across a boot sector infection that completely re-wrote the boot files. Cleaned the infection, booted to the Windows CD and re-wrote the boot ini.

Question #1:

You boot up the machine to see that it has been taken over by an I.C.E. infection and you can't access any advanced options as you only see the ICE popup. You try to boot into safe mode but the infection instantly shuts down the computer.  External scans do not find anything.

How would you fix this.

I'd use a bootdisk i've always used for infections like that. Boot into bypass the MBR. Scan with said tool. Remove the shit. Copy important files. Wipe and reinstall.

Well you might not reinstall but i would. Like fuck i'm dealing with the same customer 2 weeks down the road with the same situation. I likely also wouldn't scan the HDD if i were doing it myself. However when i worked at the shop i used to work at. That was a mandatory thing.

Also you're booting from the thumb drive. thus the virus wont bother you.

Meh, I'm a noob/snob. I don't keep anything I don't want lost solely on my pc. I try to avoid keeping anything I don't want lost via any electronic format if I can help it.

Yeah but you're a PC enthusiast. Most people that go into a store know nothing about this kinda stuff. It's all foreign to them. Never assume they have something backed up.

Oh I know. But I have no idea how to get rid of a virus other than re-formatting the hard drive so :\

Other than calling my AV people and having them do it by remote lol
