What's the bottleneck here?

Here's my awesomely drawn network topology:

Now I know I'm getting held back on network speeds by the Wireless but that's the least of my worries at the moment, I've not wired up my house yet but it is planned and getting worked on.

 

My connection from my workstation to the server is getting capped at 1.1Mb with no fluctuations somewhere along the line

I'm VPNed to the TL-WR1043ND through the local network (the servers have their own subnet separate to my computers). The computers (and my workstation) are on 10.0.1.0/24 and the servers are on 10.10.0.0/24.

 

All of the routers are running DD-WRT.

 

Whilst on the VPN, the ping time to the BGP router is about 51ms from my workstation

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=67ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=67ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=63

 

However, the ping from the server to the BGP router doesn't even reach 10ms. 

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=63 time=4.67 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=63 time=3.09 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=5 ttl=63 time=3.24 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=6 ttl=63 time=8.97 ms

 

 

Ping from workstation to BGP router without VPN:

 

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=63

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=63

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=63

Is there some sort of cap on DD-WRT's VPN throughput? Just reply if you need any more information and thanks for any help.

Pretty much, DDWRT and smaller routers are not built for encrypting 100% of the time, you're probably killing the CPU in it getting that speed.

 

Why would you have 3 routers, you could compress that all into one router and have no problems and no have to vpn to get into your own network.

Ah right, thanks. I thought it was something like that, next time I'm VPN'd in I'll run uptime on the router, to see the load.

 

I have 3 routers because the bgp router is in a different room to the server router, which is in a different room to the workstation router so I'm using them as Wi-Fi receivers since I haven't wired up my house yet and also to split up the subnets
