I'm using a R9 290 and i5-4690k.

Ofcourse it;'s fine.

 

Just because they are rival companies doesn't mean their products won't work together (excluding motherboard/CPU compatibility)

I'm using a 290 with a 3570k. kicks the shirt out of my friends 780/3770k in benchmarks and gaming fps, and his 780 is really overclocked, while mine is only at 1080mhz core.

 

so no, no problems whatsoever.
