Hello everyone

I built a computer for a friend of mine and she is having an issue we can't fully understand.

While browsing (browsers used: latest Opera or Maxthon on updated Windows 7), sometimes when opening a page the whole system freezes for a few seconds, after that it resumes as if nothing ever happened.

I suspect something suddenly uses 100% CPU for a few seconds, but I do not know what it is or what triggers it.

But it could be anything really.

Can anyone help me figure out what it is and how to fix this issue?

Specs:
Case Cooler Master HAF 922
CPU AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE @stock
Motherboard ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0

GPU AMD Radeon 6970 reference @stock

PSU Antec TP-750C

RAM Adata 2x4GB 1333MHz CL9 @stock

SSD Adata 510 128GB (Boot drive)

HDD 2x Generic 1TB SATA drives

Notes: Both browsers and OS are installed on the SSD

The PSU was recently replaced because the old one died. We do not remember if it has ever happened before replacing PSU.

The issue happens with both Opera and Maxthon.

does he have a lot of addons or plugins installed in the browser? some of them eat memory for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Try another browsers line Chrome and Firefox. If it keeps freezing see if its another program opening ir something.

BTW it happens whenever you open the browser? Or do you open the browser right after booting?

She just had the same issue with chrome.

It happens randomly, sometimes when opening the browser, sometimes the browser is already open but when trying to open another page everything freezes.

How can I disagnose what is going on with CPU utilization and programs opening or closing if everything freezes?

You can check the CPU usage in the Task Manager, but for the problem, try to install the browsers again, or a fresh Windows installation...

Maybe its the CPU that has some kind of problem... IDK

Freezing means that even the task manager does not respond.

Browsers have already been reinstalled and she does not want to format...

Sound like a small Memory issue...

Take the sticks out, add back in one at a time rebooting into Windows and shutting it down to install another.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I'm taking a random guess here but it may be virus.  try windows update first and make sure that works.  to do this just have it check for updates.  if it doesn't work you may have said problems but its all fixable..  you may need to go to system restore and go back as early as possible..

Im only suggesting this because I recently fixed a computer that had a bad virus and stuff. I think the virus (on my parents computer) even messed up the HDD and deleted a drive partition (or part of a drive partition?) because it was causing a really nasty boot loop..  Even if that isn't whats wrong, its not hard to check.

also, as a side note make sure the date and time settings are correct..  this will also cause windows update to not work.  I found that out after wasting a lot of time trying other stuff.

it would also be helpful to know which OS your'e using.

good luck duuuuuude!!  :)

Windows is fully updated.
I'm running Windows 7 x64 with updated Bitdefender AV 2014.

I have uninstalled Java runtime enviroment and reinstalled the latest version of it and now the issue has changed.
It does not freeze the whole computer, just the browser.
I'm pretty sure now it is just software related.

Hmmmmm.... The most I can recommend is to make sure all drivers are up to date and to reinstall the browsers. If nothing else works and you can't live with it formatting the drive is the only option.

Sadly nope, I have had again full system freezing as described in the original post.
I have tried reseating ram and reinstalling browsers but nothing has changed.

If it truly is a Window Update I'll never find out which one it is :(
