Hi, father told me that his notebook is not booting anymore. I went to check it and when I turned it on then upon boot it says that it was unable to boot and I should try to disconned all USB connected devices and CD/ROM or check if HDD is plugged correctly. If that does not fix the problem then there is chance that HDD is damaged. He got data he need on this HDD so I took it out of notebook and decided to try it in my desktop PC. I have 2,5" SATA to USB enclosure in which I have that drive right now connected to my PC via USB 2.0.

PC failed recognise that HDD (nothing showed up not even in disk manager) but as I plugged it after 2 minutes my PC totaly freezed.. I have it year already and it never did that before. So I restarted my PC and message appeared on my screen that Windows was unable to boot and bla bla bla (same message as on notebook). Luckily W8.1 can repair its boot without need of booting device so I am runing again but whole system feels so slow. I am runing Malwarebytes test right now and I am in dilema what to do.

Father needs photos from this HDD and other stuff. He was month away so he was unable to backup that data. I am affraid to plug that HDD back into my PC because I dont want to loose my stuff either as all my backup drives are full right now.

What to do?

(He is runing W7 Ultimate on that drive and I am runing W8.1 Enterprise on SSD if that helps somehow)

Did either systems have active anti-virus software running?

I am using windows defender active + malwarebytes passive (I scan every week) and there was AVG active + malwarebytes passive on notebook.

BTW: scan found nothing

AVG can make a bootable cd or usb stick that you can use to run a deep scan. You may try that.

But if removing the notebook's hdd from your system allowed your system to boot then it sounds as if the hdd board is failing/has failed.

I will try that. Thanks for advice.

The drive may have some bad sectors.

I would run windows check-disk on it. Google "chkdsk" for more information, or you could use THIS link.

If it shows a bunch of problems and cant fix it, i have used THIS software and it has brought back drives from the dead.
