GTX 780 with a 550W PSU

old reece frost
Go to solution Solved by Archangel1994,

That is perfectly fine. There isn't even a need to upgrade from 550W. A GTX 780 uses 300W during GPGPU (Which is more stress than gaming) so 550W PSU is more than enough.

Could I pair a GTX 780 with my PSU? The 780 has a requirement of 600W but can I use it with my 550W PSU until I can get a new one [1 - 2 weeks]?

I'm not sure if i would trust a Powercool PSU tbh. normally 550 would be fine but...

Thanks for the quick answer :3

EDIT: But I really want a new PSU cause this one is super loud.

I've ran 2 7850's on it and it never bugged out on me so I think it will be fine.

As @Jobbe03 said though Powercool isn't exactly the best brand. How long have you had this PSU for and how much amps does it have on the 12V rail? If it has at least 30-35 amps on it it should be fine.

I would suggest upgrading the PSU anyway. If you plan on doing SLI/CF in the future then I would recommend getting an AX860i (if you have money lol, it's 80+ plat) or another 850W PSU that is CF/SLI ready. Seasonic and EVGA have some good ones for this purpose. It's an incredible PSU that can easily handle 2 cards. If you don't plan on upgrading I would suggest an RM550 or any 550W 80+ bronze/gold from Seasonic, Cooler Master or any well known brand. If unsure check whether jonnyguru has a review on it. He has some very good reviews.

I've had it for about a year and 3 months and it says it has 36 amps on the 12V rail

Perfectly fine looking at that but Powercolor isn't a reputable brand as far as I know. I would still suggest the PSU upgrade but if this one is still in good working order then it should be fine. Brands like Corsair, Seasonic and Cooler Master are ones you can trust blindly though (apart from the odd PSU out that is poor but that happens to every brand :P)

AX860i if monies. One of my friends has it and it is so juicy :P. Also you might want to get 800W minimum for that headroom. Do not forget that things like HDD's and SSD's also draw power. Depending on your choice of card later it might get too close.

750W is enough for 780s in SLI ;)

especially with a Intel CPU. With an AMD FX you always should calculate 100W more though ...

True but don't forget things like fans and AIO liquid coolers. I'm taking everything into account so having some headroom is nice.

I didn't forget anything. Even with a 750 you have a rather large headroom ;)
