kernel to root?

Do i need a new kernel for my galaxy s2 GT-I9100 to root it? and if not, is htere any drawbacks to not getting a new kernel?

Nope Rooting can be done via ODIN very quickly and easily.

writing SuperSU to the system via a custom recovery will override your ROM with root functionality. No need to change kernels (but they can help with battery life/performance!)
