I'm Eighteen And I Need a Job!

DoubleDome

So I should preface this post by saying that I want a job in something tech related, whether that be a Best Buy or an Apple Store.

If you do have experience in a tech retail store like the aforementioned ones or obscure ones like TigerDirect.com, Micro Center, Fry's Electronics, etc., or know friends who work in these kinds of stores, I would really appreciate it if you gave me some input as to what it's like having a job in a place like this!

My mom keeps pushing me to get a job as a cashier at a Walmart or Target. I told her that if I'm going to work in a place that doesn't pay much, I might as well work in a place that I would find interesting and that would come with benefits that I would actually take advantage of.

Glhf. Tech retail isn't just about knowledge. You gotta also know how to make sales. If you're good at it, you MAY BE able to get in, (if at all, being beat by other older more experienced sales people gunning for the job). In the end, the company will look at who can make the sales (and bring revenue in), not who's interested in the tech and can ramble and give good tech advice to customers. I'd apply for both cashier and tech retail. In the event you don't get hired at retail, at least you can still boost up your resume for later applications citing customer service as a cashier.

I'd prepare yourself to be confident enough to sell extended warranties, repair plans, extra accessories (the whole 9 yards like a case/stylus for a tablet, usb cable for a printer (oh and the inevitable extra ink cartridges), HDMI cable for a monitor instead of the regular VGA cable that comes with it, SD card for a camera, etc).

Well at this age you won't find any jobs you'll like because you need job experence or experence for what are you'll doing, but you might be accepted as a intern working in a intership if you find one.

Honestly, you might want to try to get a job at a local radio station. That's what I did as my first job. (At 16, still there) And you will get to do all sorts of fun stuff. Including working events, to even helping with electronics around the station as long as people know you are handy with electronics. And it will be a job that never gets stale. I'd try to get an internship at a radio station first, that way when they need someone to fill a job you will be the first they call. I know it sounds crazy, but give it a shot, you'll almost definitely like it.

I originally thought I'd hate working in radio but I turned out absolutely loving it.

Nah, I'm just kidding.

-- Serious note though.

Apply and meet people. Show you're interested and persist to get a job. If you don't you'll have no chance.

I had a computer.. and then I let FedEx ship it.

Welcome to the forum!

What kind of benefits are you looking for? Most places don't give you very good dental/medical etc if that's what you mean, and staff discounts are usually pretty weak at most big box retail locations.

@T.Vengeance spoke a lot of truths. All great advice. You'll HAVE to push sales. Not only does it help the store, but in a big box environment your direct superior will be bonused on them.
You don't make him money? He doesn't want you around. Regardless of how much knowledge you have.

Best Buy is a great starting point, you need next to no experience. Just have a little knowledge and be super friendly in the interview. You don't make sales of the service plans, they won't keep you around after the 3 months.

I wouldnt work at frys after I saw a representative cram a G100s in a G602 without putting a sticker on the box.

If that bothers you, your job prospects are pretty much nil.

That's...horrible advice.

It has little to do with age or experience at big box stores and entirely on your attitude and demeanor.

Well i don't know much because i'm a 13 year old and i know these things from my sister who much older than me.

EDIT: I also found out that people would need a nice attitude when working for a job and if stores have people that don't have experience, they would teach them what to do if it was a big retail store.

Then, it probably isn't best to give that advise.

Fresh out of high-school I was an EMT in New Jersey.

First calls .. talk about no experience.

You get it with time though.

There's another way to work without experience is working as a tutor but I guess you don't really want that. For a tutor you  just need to be nice, be friendly to kids and know how to teach.

You are young and have no diploma, any job you get now wount be paying you alot.

But you can always take the exspierence with you, being a a cashier at a Walmart or Target for a few months , have worked at retail stores for 5 years.

Its all about selling, selling, selling and looking fresh and clean

The more jobs you done, you can put them in your resumé. Bosses like flexible people thats how I got with ease.

In my experience, they won't hire you without retail experience.

There are factories that hire students to put plastic things together over the summer. That's a good option if you have no experience.
