The specs i was originally thinking:

 i3 3220

hd 7850

2x4gb 1600 mhz ram

asrock b75m r2

thermaltake versa v2 +500w

seagatte barracuda 500gb

but then i got thinking and want to change a few parts

Fx 6300

asrock 970 extreme3 r2

xigmatek alfar mt

corsair vs550

and to make up the extra cost, downgrade the gpu to 7770.

These configurations could be had for the same price

I was thinking it is better to change to the fx 6300 because when i disabled 2 cores on my i5 3470, i found bf3 multiplayer dipping to the 30s.

Disabling 2 cores on the i5 would give similar GAMING performance to i3 right?

I was also thinking upgrading a gpu is easier than upgrading motherboard, cpu and power supply down the line. Do you guys think it is a bad move or that it is a better move. Obviously i won't get as good game performance because of my gpu but i am sure my client would upgrade it next year anyway and it would be easier for him because of the better quality power supply and potentially less bottle necking processor

No. disabling 2 cores on the i5 is not equivalent to an i3.

Not even close? same speed and architechture. Apparently, games don't utilize hyper threading

"they don't use hyperthreading" is applicable the 4 cores with hyperthreading. i3 = 2 cores 4 threads i7 = 4 cores 8 threads. most games use 4 threads and because i7s have 8 threads that means the 4 threads are not used.

correct me if i am wrong.

It makes a difference--especially in newer games for the i7 which has more than 4 threads. For the i3, it has 4 threads with hyperthreading and it makes all the difference in the world.

This build is almost perfect. Downgrade the psu to a cx430 and change the seagate barracuda to a WD blue 500gb. It should cost less.

wouldn't the upgraded psu, cpu mobo bbe a better upgrade path? also, wd caviar blue is slower, more expensive and has same warranty period

It seems the 'upgraded psu' is coming with the case so I don't think it'd be a bronze plus or anything like that. In that case, the cx430 would be better.

In most cases, I see the WD blue is cheaper and they're both pretty much neck to neck speed. Just get the cheaper option then.

The psu with the case is what i consider lower than getting my own case and psu. If i go with that build, a cx430 will not be able to power a high end card and the i3 will bottleneck it

Well it depends on how powerful of a gpu you're going for. The cx430 will support up to a 7870. The i3 shouldn't bottleneck the 7870 that much anyway.

It would if you got something like a 7950 or higher though.

It would be unlikely for me or anyone to upgrade from a 7850 to a 7870. That is why i was planning on getting an fx 6300 because it is overclockable, same socket for the next few years and games will only optimise for multithreaded performance. The i3 will bottleneck a 7950 is multiplayer games like bf3 and bf4. My clients main use would be to play bf4 on the pc instead of the console. He is likely to upgrade the gpu next year anyway. She is a 'console convert' as she is sick of Microsofts shit on the xbox

Hmm. I didn't think she'd upgrade so soon. Okay then.
