SLI Two different cards

as of right now I have a 

 

GIGABYTE GV-N670OC-2GD GeForce GTX 670 2GB

 

and I was looking into getting a GTX 770 either from EVGA or Gigabyte...would I be able to SLI them even though one is a 670 and one is a 770?

With Nvidia cards they have to be the same GPU, so no SLI for you with a config like that.

 

so if you bought another 670 you'd be able to SLI

you could buy two 770s and SLI those

No, only amd crossfire is possible with different cards and even then they must be very, very similar. So 2x gtx 770 or 2x gtx 670 will work, one of each won't.

It would be a bad upgrade, the 670 is still a good card. Why do you want to upgrade? If you can it would be best to just keep the 670 for now and upgrade in a couple of years. Overclock is also a thing if you want a bit more performance. Either way a 770 is a marginally better 680 and the 780 allows for 10-15 fps more than a 770 more or less, so as you can see it's not really worth it to upgrade.

Also, be careful not to put two cards from the same model but with different VRAM. For instance, a 2 GB 670 cannot be matched with a 4 GB version...

In some cases you can match them, but they will only use the card with the bigger VRAM will be downgraded = money not well spent. Although I have seen that in some cases they will not work at all and the main GPU will be active alone.

nVidia has disabled the feature of SLi same models of GPU with different VRAM capacity eg GTX760 2GB and 4GB will not SLi

 

this have been confirmed by their staff

 

so you either need to get the same model GPU with same amount of VRAM

 

or use driver hacks to get SLi working
