Aloha Custom PC forums,

I have been always hearing about how great all of these forums are, and I would like to join the DIY PC community, and I am planning on building my own PC.  I would like some suggestions that would go in line with my build.  After watching many of Linus's videos, I have come to learn most of the ways, and parts that are needed to build a PC, and I have taken his advice, and made my own build. I have also learn that Linus is shaken by the word "future-proof", but I tried to make the build easily upgrade-able in the future, like adding a second graphics card for gaming. and putting things in the build that I will not have to replace to upgrade(like just adding more). I have seen that Intel processors have a great performance boost over AMD's CPUs, and along this line, I would like to stick with NVIDIA's GPUs for their software.

Here is the build that I am planning to build that is about $1500 USD or $1600 CD  (listed prices are of 7/26/14)

CPU- Intel 4670k $216

CPU cooler- Corsair H100i $89

Ram- 8gb G-Skill Ripjaws $80

Motherboard- MSI Gaming 5 $150

Case- NZXT. H440 $120

SSD- PNY XLR8 240Gb $109

PSU- EVGA Super Nova 750w $110

GPU- EVGA gtx 770 2gb $340

OS- Windows 8.1 ~$90

Monitor- Asus VG248VE 144hz $250

Thanks guys, I hope you understand first time builds, and can give me your opinions.   :)

Well you're buying a Z87 CPU at the end of the Z87 life cycle so I suggest an i5 4690k and an MSI compatible motherboard.

Spoiler

i5 4670k, GTX 970, 12GB 1600, 120GB SSD, 240GB SDD, 1TB HDD, CM Storm Quickfire TK, G502, VG248QE, ATH M40x, Fractal R4

Spoiler

i5 4278U, Intel Iris Graphics, 8GB 1600, 128GB SSD, 2560x1600 IPS display, Mid-2014 Model

Spoiler

All the parts are here, just need to get customized cords to connect the motherboard to the front panel.

Hi, welcome to the forums :)

It looks you are aiming for a 1080p 120hz+ gaming experience. In  this case, getting as much  GPU power as you can is the best way to get more performance.

The build looks pretty nice overall, but I'd make this changes:

Spend less on cooling, a couple Mhz doesn't alter gaming performance, a CM 212 Evo is more than enough, and as you said, you can always upgrade later.

Go for the R9 290, it's the best out there for a high end $/performance solution.

The PSU is overkill for a single GPU system, if you wondered about a possible dual-GPU config, you will need to step up to a 850W PSU to have 2x R9 290s on the system.

I was going to go for the water cooling for the overclocking, will air cooling do well in high overclocks?

A system with a i5 at stock speeds with a R9 290 will perform much better on games than a system with a i5 at 4.5ghz and a GTX 770.

Air is no inferior to AiO Water Coolers  (the term "i'm watercooling" is used for custom loops, not AiOs) a NH-D15 performs better than the H100i, while being cheaper, more quiet and more reliable.

The Hyper 212 is a good budget cooler, you will have some OC headroom with it, and spending less money on cooling will increase your GPU budget.

One last question, which aftermarket cooler do you think is best for price to performance, and thanks a lot for the help.
